When Wildlife comes to the city

Last night about 3:30 in the morning after I was done doing the dishes I went out on the deck patio and listened there were no birds making any noises and also the distance I could hear a large cat not just any cat this was a large bobcat I could tell by the thrust of his voice that he was an older one as I listened it got closer so I went in 4:40 in the morning my girlfriend asked me to get some furniture out of the storage unit Outback on my way to the storage unit the dumpster which was it partially in the dark had a commotion and a very large animal size of a medium dog leaped out of it I could tell by the pointed ears but it was the bobcat scared the bejesus out of me

So far in our condo we’ve spotted three deer and one coyote on our back patio. We live on the very edge of town. No cougars!

I used to live and work in Palo Alto, a large affluent college city near Stanford University in California.

I was a park ranger in 1999 and I patrolled one park in particular fairly often. It was smack dab in the city not near and mountains or wilderness but about a year after I left the job I was reading in the newspaper that there were two separate incidents where a mountain lion was spotted in or near that park. I think animal control killed one.

Mountain lions are actually usually afraid of people and avoid them and I haven’t heard of any attacks in recent years but twenty years ago there were a few incidents where joggers or hikers were attacked. Most wildlife avoid humans but once you start encroaching on their habitat you will have more incidents.

We have a mountain lion in town right now, made the Redding news a couple times. It’s been sighted all over town. We are overrun by deer right now. The other morning I stepped out my ex’s front door to go home and I was face to face with a herd of deer. I stepped back inside and went to the restroom. When I came back out they had moved along and I could safely make my way to my apartment. I don’t trust them. I had confrontations with deer before. Some people will feed them and get too close. It’s not good for them.

I’m in suburbia in Australia. Only thing I see is large lizards…had a good sized blue tongue lizard getting around and a decent sized green tree snake. The snakes are the worry over here but it was harmless…so it was interesting nonetheless. So besides flying foxes and possums that is the wildlife we see.

EDIT: 5/20/2021 update on the San Francisco mountain lion

Are bobcats dangerous ?

There was a mountain lion sighting a town over from me not too long ago. I’m sure to be extra careful walking to and from my car at night now.

It depends on how hungry they are no I mean really they come out of their environment looking for food because there’s is depleted a bobcat will take on a small child or a young person or an elderly person only if they’re alone I was only worried because the Bobcat was in the trash can which is a good sign he was hungry
