I have an issue where people seem to react to my body odor. I can take small excursions for a few minutes to an hour, but after that I start to sweat which exacerbates my concern about my body odor which makes me sweat more. I’m almost 99% sure that I actually stink, but every doctor I’ve gone to has denied it.
When I’m working, especially manual labor, I get seriously distracted and demoralized by people’s reaction to my odor. It’s a huge stressor. I’m not sure if it’s my breath, body, or both. But it seems like my breath is the worst culprit (dental hygiene is bad, I can’t be bothered most days.).
I shower everytime I go out (unless it’s just a quick hop out to grab something and I showered within a few days of hopping out.)
Do you think you could handle the embarrassment of going to work everyday where everyone seems to hate you and just wants you gone because of your odor? Not to mention the fact that they blame my habits and think its my fault, when I generally do most of what I can to mitigate the problem.
This is my main impediment to work, although through the years it’s grown to encompass a paranoia that someone will gun me down or something while I’m at work. It just seems there’s no winning with this disease. If concern about body odor or body image isn’t a problem, something worse will come down the line.
Yeah, I do, with regards to body odor and working. But people still give me a hard time when I’m working. It’s one thing or another. I’m either a stinker or too slow paced. IDK.
What type of manual labor were you doing? I’m a pretty heavy sweater myself. Maybe you were just with mean people. I’ve only ever been told I stink when I wore dirty clothes.
I’m so sorry for you, @Coldcomfort. I’m like 99.99% sure you are delusional about your “body odor” and are hallucinating people’s reactions. I’m very sure of it.
It seems to me that having passable body odor is up to you. Showers, breath mints, Tic-Tacs, gum, baths, de-oderant, antiperspirant, cologne, brushing teeth, mouthwash, soap, shampoo, body wash, nullo, etc. All these can help control your body odor and are available over the counter at most drug stores. Someone made a similar post months ago; it might have been you. If doctors are denying you smell: believe them! I can see maybe one or two doctors trying to spare your feelings by telling you that you have no strong odor, but if every doctor is telling you your odor is fine then it’s time to believe them.
Don’t be so sure that you are reading people right. It’s easy to misread body language.
And by the way, it’s normal to sweat when you are doing labor jobs.
I don’t think the doctors wud lie to you if you were asking them if you smelled. You probably don’t smell. And if u do, it’s okay. My breaking point is wen they expect me to go impossibly fast. I hav been disliked in my work before and I seemed to stay on so I guess that’s not my breaking point
My stressor seems to be responsibility
For others, lkke a group of teens or the team over Christmas when everyone has to be there for each other
Or to be there for one individual for moral support
Especially when there is a build up towards an event
The only exception I can think of is with a theatre project I was writing for a devised group
When it came to the. ‘Show must go on’ time I pulled out all the stops and focused on. The actors
Gained about 20 lbs in 8 weeks tho with the stress
I’ve not been in hospital for 12 years
Aye yo you might be trippin i wouldnt worry about it too much cause your working in a hard field and getting things accomplished think on that subject matter more and im pretty sure you will stop caring about the way you smell. I use to work at a tire shop and had to be around all types of customers from pretty women to all sorts of people and i had terrible anxiety at that. Not to mention i wore the same work pants everyday that i only washed once a week. Anyway i used to be sweating my butt off talking to these people and slangin tires and sometimes i would worry that i smelt bad from working with tires and the dunk tank. But what help me not worry about that was the fact that i was proud to be working hard and getting paid for my services. Try thinking more in that way and you should be start to feel different. And if they do say u smell they just busting chops. I used to work in a shipping and receiving area where they did that like 8 hours a day. just tell them straight up like its hard work bro give me some slack. They might say u need some soap instead but give em reason not to say it like where body sprays and shower before and after work. I hope this helps
At my past jobs. It was dealing with mean people call after call. At another it was working 15 days straight during a holiday crunch time and standing in one place on a cement floor for 12 hours a day.
My breaking point at present is hearing people talk at a distance, where it gets mumbly and I might hallucinate them saying something about me. It hasn’t been happening recently though.
I might be out of the woods with that symptom since my treatment is working so nicely.
