I am always confused about my diagnosis. It seems one time my bipolar diagnosis is correct, other times i feel i have schizophrenia. Since i have so much of delusions and hallucinations. Its so apparent, that i might have schizophrenia. Can anyone shed light on what the difference is? how one can be sure it is either?
umm I’m not a DR or not too experienced with bipolar people but I have a sis in-law that has it. she seems to have some mood swings but doesn’t hallucinate at all…maymbe gets offended easily? I’m not sure…I actually ended up arguing with her one time and after it, I realized that maymbe it was due to both of our illnesses. I’m not sure how extreme or difficult her situation is but ive dealt with other people who get offended easily also but aren’t mentally ill (at least not diagnosed). She was officially diagnosed though and refuses treatment as far as I know…
U should ask ur pdoc if schizoaffective bipolar might describe what it experiencing…
Ask your pdoc, schizophrenia doesn’t have hypomania/mania and depression, schizoaffective has and in some cases it may be hard even for a good doc to make a differential diagnosis. (for example @Wave talked about it.)
Bipolar is mood disturbances. Schizophrenia is primarily a breakdown in thought processes. Both are unpleasant: BPD means moods are either going too high or too low, and schizophrenia means thoughts become fragmented.
I have been Dx Bipolar but that changed to Schizoaffective disorder when I was having psychosis after the mood element.
There are a lot of similarities between both Schizophrenia and Bipolar disorder.
Some differences too.
This article is very informative.
From the Wikipedia article: Unlike schizophrenia, bipolar disorder has very little differences for gray matter volume.
Interesting.
bi polar people i find are anusholes and sz are cool
Thanks for all the responses. I am probably schizoaffective. But I am not sure how it will affect my treatment. After last psychosis, my behaviour, thought pattern everything changed. Not for good. And its a lengthier one, it is lasting for more than 1.5 years now combination of high and low. But now a persistent low is maintained. I heard if you have schizophrenia, there is no high or low. But there is psychosis and constant abnormality. I fear i have constant abnormality though.
What is your diagnosis, @Melomaniac?
Bipolar’s go through periods of extreme sadness alternating with periods of extreme hyperactivity, irritability and inappropriateness. They can experience hallucinations and delusions.
Schizophrenics, on the other hand, go through periods of seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling, or tasting things that are not there, called hallucinations. They also can go through periods of believing things that are not true, called delusions. Their memory and thinking can be adversely affected. They can also go through periods where they do not take care of themselves, they don’t talk much, and don’t show much emotion.
Schizoaffective’s demonstrate some of all of the above symptoms.
I have experienced both of the symptoms in recent times for past 1.5 years. In the past i have had episodes but i was back normal in few weeks. This time the episode lasted for 4-5 months and then i was back to normal but i was not under any treatment until i started to panic, that was after 1 year the episode started. I fear i screwed up my life and no way out now. Since i lost most of the close relationships and i am not able to repair them or there is no chance of repairing them.
What is your official diagnosis, may I ask, @Melomaniac?
Bipolar I
