What is the difference between bipolar and schizophrenia

Hey @Melomaniac
Psychiatrists have a hard time diagnosing me as well.
I was diagnosed with bipolar for many years, but my current diagnosis is Schizoaffective disorder.

My current psychiatrist is confused I think.

There is an overlap between schizophrenia and bipolar at times.

I am okay okay…can u still work for longer period of time…how much stress do u find while working…i ask u cuz i cant work till my life ends…

Hi @Wave, One pdoc i went gave me schizoaffective once. Same pdoc after 5 years gave me bipolar I. But I wanted second opinion so i went to another pdoc, he also gave me Bipolar I. Now i am not sure how its going to affect my life. But something seriously wrong with me and i want to correct it. Hope the correct diagnosis can guide me to better management and life.

I love you @Melomaniac !

Honestly, there is not a big difference between bipolar 1 and Schizoaffective.
The meds are usually the same.

Many people with Bipolar work and function.
Schizophrenia is more disabling.

I have a hard time working and socializing.
This is why the Schizoaffective diagnosis probably fits me better.

Do you suffer with hallucinations or delusions @Melomaniac?

I think somewhere down the thought process, i lose the link and i get into some other world of thoughts which is not close to reality. So i keep on hallucinating and have false beliefs about life in general.

Yeah you might be suffering with Schizoaffective Disorder.
It’s basically Bipolar with some schizophrenia mixed in.

These diagnoses are not perfect.
Lots of grey areas and overlap.

Overlap means between schizo and bipolar? And Grey areas means stability?

Yes @Melomaniac.
Diagnosing people is not an exact science.

Haha. I guess that’s true to a point. A lot of geniuses and successful bipolar people though. They can be so productive.

I used to enjoy my work for 3 odd years. I was like happy to get new things on my plate. Now after an episode i feel like i will screw up a simple thing. It became so annoying for me and others. Now its little ok. But the amount of time it takes to heal from an episode is enormous for me atleast.

Bipolar=psychotic symptoms only experienced with mania, outside of mania no psychosis, also psychotic symptoms are not required for bipolar diagnosis and not all bipolar people get psychotic symptoms (I think like type 2 bipolar rarely if ever gets psychosis for example)

Sz=constant symptoms of psychosis regardless of mood, don’t have to even have any mood problems for diagnosis and not all have mood problems

Sza=Mood problems+constant psychosis that is there regardless if in a mood episode or not

Yes good breakdown @Anna.
Just would like to add that people with Bipolar can also experience psychosis during a depressive episode as well.
It’s not just during Mania.
