So I have been eating cheap lately. Not much eating out and not much meat. Ive been eating lots of peanut butter on whole grain bread, carrots and cabbage, eggs, and cereals like oatmeal, multigrain cheerios and all bran. I buy oranges too.
Today I bought a few bags of split peas, durum semolina macaroni elbows, heinz 57 sauce. I cooked 3/4 cup of peas which has 15 grams protein. I also cooked 3/4 cup macaroni which has about the same. I put about a tablespoon of 100%peanut butter in a saucepan with heaping tablespoon 57 sauce with about 100 ml water. I put the peas and macaroni in that and mixed it around until it was pretty dry, but not to sear it because plant stuff doesnt sear well.
It tasted pretty good but there was no veggie in it. Im thinking celery green pepper or cauliflower would make it better. Anyway I feel fed after eating it and it is a good bit of protein for cents not dollars.
Yep i love soybeans. Soybeans dont taste good cooked sometimes. I like edamame. There are other types of soybean like the dry bean that if i made this recipe with it would be really hard to eat
Sure, like you say, you don’t have to cut out meat completely but eating meatless two or three times a week can save money. You can also try having breakfast for dinner once a week to save money. Making pancakes is cheap or oatmeal or eggs or even cold cereal.
Also, when you buy meats, buy the cheaper cuts and buy in bulk on sale. Chicken is high in protein and usually cheaper than beef. You can also save money by buying the fruit and vegetables that are in season.
IDK about your area where you live but here in the Bay Area we get weekly ads in the mail for the sales at the 4 most popular stores. They have good sales in the ads. I also discovered that if you go to the stores website they usually show the weekly ads for that store. You can still eat meat like beef but it’s smart to mix it up with non meat dinners.
