So I’ve heard this term a lot, but I’m not actually completely sure what it means. Could somebody explain it to me so that I do know what it is?
For me its any sz episode, anything out of this world, its when my mind gets preoccupied in present moment, and I can’t do nothing but I act on it.
Where you lose touch with reality. Like you’re in a dream. So you could think you could fly and end up jumping off a building.
Okay thank you so much!
As far as I know and can remember I don’t think that I have had one then. I always know when I’m hallucinating though I’ll have doubts if wether my actual life is real, but I feel like I know that it isn’t and it’s just me being paranoid and foolish.
Well first, I define “reality” as the shared objective experiences between most humans. For example, everyone in the room can see the bowl of broccoli on the table.
Then we have our own subjective realities, which usually align objectively with the shared reality, though may differ based on subjective things. For example, everyone in the room can see the bowl of broccoli on the table, but some people think broccoli is delicious, while some think it tastes gross, and some have no opinion on its taste. And while Person A believes that Person B made broccoli because they know Person A doesn’t like it, Person C thinks that Person B made broccoli because they know that Person C does like it. So people are perceiving the situation in different ways, but they all have the shared objective reality that there is definitely a bowl of broccoli on the table.
When our personal reality comes into objective conflict with the shared reality, that means that someone is experiencing psychosis. If Person A sees a bowl of broccoli on the table, but Person B sees a bowl of peaches, then we know at least one of them is drawing an objective conclusion that is false.
This is why it’s very important for health professionals to actually discuss the beliefs and concerns of a patient who is suspected of experiencing psychosis, to determine if it’s a matter of subjective perceptions that are causing distress, or if there is actually an objective error at work.
