I’m talking about the sensitive bad ass, like Mel Gibson in “Lethal Weapon”, or Val Kilmer playing Doc Holiday in “Tombstone”, Sylvester Stallone in “Rocky” and the Rambo movies. I could go on. Most of the critics seem to like this character, but this character has been done so many times that people should be getting tired of them. The first Rocky movie was good, but then Stallone started telling the same story over and over again. I did read one review of the first “Lethal Weapon” movie that stated the way I felt about this story. If a movie has a bad ass in it I like to see him more nuanced than he is in the mainline movies. I loved “Cinderella Man”, and “The Wrestler” with Micky Roarke. A good movie about the mechanics of violence in the real world is “Unforgiven”. These characters are quirky, and complex. Most of the movies with a sensitive bad ass are heavy handed and formulaic. This sensitive bad ass is a formula, not a character.

You should watch Dexter on Netflix. He is the protagonist but has a dark side. Creed is a spin off of the Rocky movies. It was good bc it doesn’t end like one expects
