What do you believe is the biggest contributing factor in your developing SZ/SZA? - Poll

I posted something similar to this long ago but a recent thread made me curious as to the communities beliefs. I did not include “stress” in the options because it seems like more of a trigger than a direct cause, but if you think that that is your cause feel free to post that it is.

What do you believe is the biggest contributing factor to your development of sz/sza?
  • Genetic factors
  • Childhood trauma
  • Drugs/Alchohol
  • Prenatal exposure to toxins or viruses or birth complications
  • Other environmental factors/or injuries
  • Other (Please state)

For me I think its genetics and stress. But thing is if I didn’t have the genetic predisposition, I would have handled even more stress without getting sz. So I say its mostly genetic.

I think for lots of szics sz reduces our ability to handle stress like full time work etc

Definitely genetic factors for schizophrenia.

However, I grew up in an extremely religious household that I believe contributed to me developing OCD.

Biggest possible trigger I feel was my genetics. My bloodline has dealt with mental illness for generations. Both sides.

The drugs, I originally sought out to ease my symptoms. We all know how that turns out. I attribute that too a worse prognosis over the years. More intense symptoms.

I had some childhood trauma, but I don’t feel it really had affect to the extreme of causing psychosis.

Just happen to have a “Brain thing”.

I strongly believe that the established distinction between trigger and root cause of schizophrenia needs to be further refined.

I really can’t say. I drank insanely for a while, but there was a great big stressor in my life that I think warped me. I don’t feel like going into it tonight. The alcohol played a role in my mental illness I think. I just don’t know.

Definitely the environment and genetics.

I had exposure to more than one of those factors but I think the big one was the 1968 pandemic.

I voted genetics because I think it plays a large role but it could be that schizophrenia can be caused by a variety of things.

Cancer for example could be genetic (oncogenes), it could be caused by chemicals (cigarette smoke), it can be caused by radiation (too much Sun). To say cancer is caused by just one thing would be mistaken, it could be the same thing for schizophrenia.

To be honest I think it is libido. It used to be too high, and I went nuts after women, quite literally.

For me it was genetics, my mother’s toxemia of pregnancy with me, severe childhood trauma, pot smoking as a teen, and severe, long term stress.

with genetics it’s important to remember that even if you have predisposing genes, they need to be turned on by your environment. although in some families it’s plainly obvious that it’s the genetics.

Definitely genetics for a mood disorder/SZA
Stress played a role as well.
I was raised in a tumultuous overly emotional environment.
