Were "New kids on the block" the first manufactured boy band?

If so, they’re part of music history and set the mold for generations to come. They must surely represent the end of an old way of music and the beginning of a new manufactured way.

Thre must have been a band put together before them, there have been so many.

I just asked Bing’s a.i. and it said

Yes, New Kids on the Block was one of the first boy bands to be manufactured. The band was formed in 1984 by music producer Maurice Starr and consisted of five members: Donnie Wahlberg, Jordan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Danny Wood, and Jonathan Knight¹. They enjoyed immense success in the late 1980s and early 1990s, selling more than 80 million records worldwide¹. They are often credited with paving the way for future boy bands such as Take That, Backstreet Boys, and NSYNC¹. In 1990, they won two American Music Awards for Favorite Pop/Rock Band, Duo, or Group and Favorite Pop/Rock Album¹. The group disbanded in 1994 but reunited in 2007 to record an album and mount a concert tour in 2008¹. They received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2014¹.

Boston group New Edition was formed in 1978 and reached their height of popularity in the 1980s, meaning they are often credited for starting the boy-band trend, even though the term “boy band” did not exist until the 1990s. Maurice Starr was influenced by New Edition and popularized it with his protégé New Kids on the Block(NKOTB), the first commercially successful modern boy band, which formed in 1984 and found international success in 1988.

What about the Monkees? Weren’t they manufactured as an American Beatles on tv?

Boy bands are usually teenagers. Most of the Monkees were in their twenties. And boy bands are typically made for young teen girls. The Monkees, like the Beatles, appealed to many ages.
And yes, The Monkees supposedly were America’s answer to the Beatles but eventually became a pretty legitimate band and even outsold the Beatles one year.

They did some pretty good tunes. I always think Daydream believer is a really sad song :smiling_face_with_tear:

Im thinking all the motown bands etc.

Honestly, if you’re listening to a song and it tickles your pickle, that’s what matters.
