We got a new boss about three months ago. Before he got here, we had two supervisors and one of them was usually gone but this new boss is always on site. I didn’t know what to expect from him. At first it seemed like he was going to be strict and make some changes and make us work harder. Nobody wants that but gradually over the last month and a half I see that he’s actually very mellow, very friendly and easygoing and he doesn’t push us.
He tells us to take our time doing our janitors job and he knows we’re not fast and he’s OK with that. He’s kind of a little guy who dresses flashy and I thought he was kind of a small deal in a respectful way. I figured he’s got a wife and kids and he took on this janitor job because he couldn’t do anything else. I’m not trying to be mean, that’s just the impression I got. Well, looks are deceiving.
I was talking to him today and he started telling me about some of his past jobs and they were pretty impressive. At one point he had 600 people working under him at a large local mall complex. At another mall he had 200 people working for him. And he’s worked at some prestigious malls around here. I was sure surprised. And he told me he started his career at age 19 and he was in charge of 30 and 40 year old men. He even told me that he used to be a boxer for the army and when I asked him if he was any good he said, “Well, I never got knocked out but I knocked out plenty of other guys.” I have a new found respect for him. And I see that I was right, that he’s easygoing and he’s going to take it easy on us. We lucked out getting him as a boss.
