Weight gain from risperdal

Hi. I have been on risperdal injections for over 2 years now.

First it was 75 mg every 14 days = 5.36mg/day
Then it was 50 every 10 days = 5mg/day
Then it was 50 every 14 days = 3.5mg/day
Now it is 37.5 every 14 days = 2.7mg/day

This lowering of the dose happened over a period of 2 years.

At first, I gained 80 pounds (165 to 245)
I dieted, and lost 15 pounds.

Why isn’t the reduction in medication not taking weight off (the same weight that was originally added from the first dose level).

I don’t understand. Any information would help.
Thank you,
Andrew

Risperdal made me suicidal because of sexual side effects plus weight gain. I am now on prolixin generic - “fluphenazine” and have been losing weight on it…you might see about getting on that.

Ok, thank you for your advice. I’m glad you are feeling better now !

Welcome to the forum @Ace12301989 .

I’m not sure how antipsychotic weight gain happens.

According to this pubmed article

Except for aripiprazole, amisulpride and ziprasidone, most antipsychotics including FGAs showed significant weight gain.

I’m on two weight gaining AP’s: Risperdal Consta and Seroquel. Recently, I’ve been slowly gaining more and more weight despite counting calories scrupulously and exercising every day. It is extremely frustrating. I don’t know what to do.
