Was Stanley Kubrick a genius?

I think his movie 2001 : A Space Odyssey was superb…listening to the soundtrack right now…his other movies like The Shining are really good too…do you like Kubrick?

I think he’s a great director but apparently he wasn’t the nicest person around

he kept the boy, Danny unaware of what was really going on in the movie…that’s a kind man.

He also abused Shelly Duvall on the set of the Shining

I don’t believe that…I know that Jack Nicholson stayed in character off the set and it made Shelly really scared of him.

I don’t know the actual facts @jukebox

Could be a bunch of rumors on the internet

There’s conflicting reports about it

Stanley Kubrick’s treatment of Shelley Duvall during the filming of The Shining is well-documented and often described as intense and demanding. Kubrick, known for his meticulous and perfectionist approach, pushed Duvall to her limits to elicit a genuine performance of fear and anxiety¹².

Duvall herself has spoken about the emotional and physical toll the role took on her. She described the experience as the most difficult of her career, mentioning that the stress led to periods of ill health¹. One of the most infamous examples of Kubrick’s demanding nature is the baseball bat scene, which reportedly required 127 takes². This relentless pursuit of perfection left Duvall exhausted and emotionally drained¹.

Despite the challenges, Duvall’s performance as Wendy Torrance is considered one of the most memorable aspects of the film. However, the experience left a lasting impact on her, both mentally and emotionally¹².

well that answers my not knowing …thank you…I still like Kubrick as a director.

I love the films, he is a genius, but a manipulative and bad person. He abused many of his staff and actors (I see cited by @everhopeful above). It was not just Shelley Duvall. Malcolm McDowell has also spoken out about his trauma and has regrets about A Clockwork Orange. His films are unmatched, but the man himself was very much a monster.

well gee whiz, and I thought he was such a nice guy…well, at least he protected Danny.

I enjoyed Clockwork Orange, The Shining, 2001 and Full Metal Jacket. Eyes Wide Shut was boring though. I think he did Spartacus as well. Wow

He was taken out shortly before releasing the directors cut of eyes wide shut. He was gonna expose Hollywood.

Full metal jacket is an excellent war film. " You talk the talk but do you walk the walk"

He made good movies but his personality was abusive
