They’re making a Harry Potter remake tv show available on HBO Max! I don’t like JK Rowling because of her views on life but I am still a fan of Harry Potter I can’t help it I actually got excited to see this tv show… Does this make me a bad person that I really want to see this? I know her views are awful but she is very creative and I’ve been a fan for so freaking long I’m not sure I can just stop being a fan… Can’t I hate her but love Harry Potter? I’m not sure
I think you can watch, listen to, and read her stuff, without liking her. It’s not like she’s gonna go broke if you don’t.
It’s that age old question that’s also about movie stars. Do you like their acting and hate their personal life choices. I think Rowling viewpoints are pretty pervasive in her writings though. I don’t think her writings are purely innocent. I think they reflect her belief system which is pretty hatey. So I don’t support any of her works anymore.
This is an issue I had with some of the music I liked. I listen to these artists and feel uncomfortable doing it.
@cdwithdcs yeah I think you might be right
@anon55031185 maybe not and it makes me feel bad for liking Harry Potter but I’m not sure I can help but enjoy a lot of it.
@anon19606225 it’s hard to decide… Like the new profile picture btw
The profile picture has to look the best it can on the forum xD
She’s not the only fantasy writer out there. There are better fantasy writers that she ripped from. I dunno, she’s popular but there are better, more respectable fantasy writers that deserve notice.
You cannot like her work without liking racist, homophobic content. She’s stated as well that by consuming her work, people support her views.
@anon19606225 so true
@anon55031185 I agree… I have a hard time reading/listening to new stuff… Also a lot of them don’t have movies… Most of the media I enjoy is visual and audio… I have trouble reading as well and something new to read makes me nervous… If I could get a few author’s to look up maybe I wouldn’t like Harry Potter so much
@anon4362788 I didn’t hear that part… Ugh
I have had the same thing re one of my favourite bands,the Byrds. Finding out McGuinn was a R.
@firemonkey it sucks
Here is an in depth explanation.
Try Rick Riordan and his Percy Jackson series.
My gf is a huge trans rights supporter but she also loves the hogwarts legacy game and plays it heaps. Whats wrong with that?
@anon4362788 I never realized any of that while reading and watching Harry Potter… I feel bad I missed all of that.
I might
No reason to feel bad.
Once we learn, then we strive to do better.
@anon4362788 so true
I am going to surprise everyone with my thoughts on this. (I am trans, for any new people).

Of course you didn’t see the racist and transphobic tropes hidden in the books. They are children’s books. You probably read them as a child. They are rather obvious in hindsight, but nobody should expect a fourth grader to open up a fun adventure book and then say “wait a minute, this is written in such a way that the author seems like a future leader of a hate group.” And if you remember liking something as a kid, it can be harder to notice the themes you missed in your youth. It becomes background static to your nostalgia.

JK Rowling is currently the leader of a prominent hate group. The main issue with consuming her media is that she uses her money to personally fund said hate group, and lobby to pass laws against trans people. People refuse to buy her products because they do not want their dollars being used to fuel a genocide.

JK Rowling currently has so much money that, even if every single person on earth stopped buying Harry Potter products today, she would still never run out of money, just on earned interest. Additionally, many Harry Potter licenses are now negotiated using a flat fee. She is paid one time for the use of her characters, no matter how successful the media becomes. This means that a boycott will not be an effective means of achieving the goal “defund JK Rowling’s hate campaign.” The reason for boycotting becomes largely symbolic. It is a cheap and fairly effortless way to signal to others that you support trans people.
Now, I personally do not speak for every trans person. I am only speaking to my own experiences. But I have grown weary of symbolic support gestures that do not make any meaningful progress towards an attainable goal. I feel like it gives people an easy out. “No, I didn’t correct my brother when he misgendered my best friend, but that’s okay because I don’t watch Harry Potter!” “I have never once volunteered at my local LGBT community center, but I support trans lives by not watching a TV show!”
Things like that can be very insidious, because it allows people to feel like they have done their part, when they actually did nothing. I equate it with the people who comment “thoughts and prayers” on crowdfunding posts for medical expenses. There is nothing bad about boycotting Harry Potter, but there is also nothing helpful about it. It is just a thing some people do because they are personally disgusted when they realize the full implications of some of the themes. Boycotting Harry Potter does not actually support trans lives in any way other than symbolically. Symbols can be helpful to some people. I have personally grown weary of them.
@Ninjastar thank you very much for your insight I really appreciate that… I have several trans friends and some are still fans and some aren’t… To show my support I plan to vote for the first time in my life and that’s a big thing for me, I’m trying to figure out the best presidency candidate and plan on voting for them along with all the other voting I can do… I want to help and this is best I can do
Not getting political sorry just realized that can be political sorry if you wanna flag that I understand
