I have been on disability now for 12 years and want to go back to work. I want to be a semi truck driver. They pay for the training…which is good because I have no money. My only concerns are that my psychiatrist and parents don’t want me to go back to work. They think the stress of it would be to hard for me to handle. I don’t agree with them and I have noticed that a fair amount of people on this site still work even though they were diagnosed with schizophrenia. I plan on talking to my doctor again about it a week from Friday when I go to see her. Another scare of mine is that if things did go bad I don’t know how hard it would be to get back on disability. As far as my mental state I am doing good…I don’t hear voices anymore. I would like to try and get back on my feet again…I just feel like the world is against me on this one. Oh the reason I am waiting until February to try is because my student loans will be paid off/written off then.
I was told by a well meaning doc that the stress of school would relapse me. But you know… I didn’t know about on-line classes or the student with disability services.
I got on this site and saw how many were in school and I decided to give just one on-line class a try. It went well… I went for two… that went well… I kept going…
I’m a year into my degree now.
If you want to go back to work… taking a good look at what’s out there and all the options is a great way to start.
I’m rooting for you… Hope you get some ideas that starts the path to your goal.
I could never be a truck driver. Too much traffic here in California. It would be even worse to drive cross-country; in the dark or in bad weather. They drive for 8 hours straight, sometimes more. I’m not saying you couldn’t do it but those are the things that would stop me. But hey, an old housemate of mine put himself through truck driving school by driving a taxi. He got hired by a company to drive coast-to-coast. He worked for them for several months driving their trucks and saved his money and bought his own Semi. He drove that for several months and saved his money and bought a condo and moved out. It’s a lucrative job but not everybody is cut out to do it. I’ve gone of disability before for a few months and tried to support myself. It didn’t work so I got back on. I don’t seem to remember it being that hard to get back on but this was in the eighties, things have probably changed.
A Pepsi truck arrives at the back of 7-11 around 10:AM. The driver hauls stacks of soda inside the store. You should drive a Pepsi truck.
Sounds like everyone is just worried for you.
It`s a great idea to start working again…maybe try something small at first-just get your feet wet and see how that goes. Not trying to discourage you, but I work for a company that has lots of truckdrivers and it can be stressful, especially in winter when the snow comes in.
