Anyone else here doing it? (Starting this thread for @LilyoftheValley in particular.)
I’m using an Oculus Quest 2 (OQ2), which is a pretty good system for the price. There are better systems for sure, but they cost a lot more (e.g. the VR for my PS4).
Mine is used strictly for exercise, my rule is that it’s not for use sitting down. Ever. Here’s an intro to the OQ2…
Here are the exercise games I have…
Supernatural
Synth Riders
Beat Saber
OHSHAPE
Here are a few videos I’ve captured while playing. Yeah I suck, but I don’t care as long as I’m breaking a sweat…
Here is how my VR rig looks at the moment…
I’m loving it because it’s good exercise that doesn’t feel like exercise. I look forward to it every evening.
Man you’re giving me a wicked case of tech envy !!! Here I am, I can barely afford Pong and you’re sailing the seas of VR!!! Still, you totally deserve it, seeing how you rawk an’ all… but dayyam…
I don’t drink. I don’t smoke. I rarely eat out. Most of my clothes are bought on sale or second hand from the thrift store. If you see me posting a fancier meal, we likely got the ingredients at a wholesaler for 1/3 to 1/2 of retail. We started a grocery shopping club when we moved here with my wife’s co-workers. We split up the bulk purchases between five families. We hardly ever puchase pre-made meals. A lot of my veggies are heavily discounted because they’re on the edge of spoiling. That asparagus no longer makes a good side but it makes great soup at 75% off. And so on.
HOO WEE! CHILL CHILL!! Dude, it was all in fun, not an indictment !! I’m totally happy for you to have good things, with what we go through in life it’s small potatoes !!! WOOOF! UT! Have an unusually happy day today for no good reason at all !
I wouldn’t mind trying it put I would have to find a place to set that kind of thing up without invading my parents or nieces spaces. Maybe the basement. Something to think on .
And @firemonkey, notice how I blew it first on the Normal skill level (2nd vid), but that I’m getting better with practice? I finished a more difficult song at a higher skill level a few days later…
I’m having fun and I’m getting exercise. I could care less if I’m not as good as pro gamers or I look like an arse while playing. This is about me getting healthier and feeling better.
I end up getting really frustrated with video games , because I don’t see the kind of admirable progress someone like you makes. For sure there’s a ‘practice effect’, but it’s not a large one in my case.
That last video is my first run through this song (Glenn Frey - Heat Is On). Holy hell. I don’t recall the song feeling that fast when i saw Beverly Hills cop in the theatre.
Well well well, I found a new way to suck this evening:
It turns out there are free VR games you can play on the Web. Load them in your browser and click the launch VR button. This one is called Moon Riders and it’s pretty cool. This was my very first try at it so I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to do with everything. Will have to look up the instructions.
I’m also trying to make my videos look a bit less grotty.
It’s soooooo much fun. All the movements you see in the game are mirroring movements I make in real life in my family room. The controllers and headset motion sensors and camera tracking translate them to the virtual environment in real time. There’s no noticeable lag.
I’ve lost about 13 pounds since the middle of January by cleaning up my diet, doing a bit of weight lifting, and exercising with my quest 2. It’s super fun and I’ve remained consistent with it.
