Yeah but is it even the food? Ultra processed food eaters aren’t normally distributed in the population, for example they are disproportionately represented in the lower classes which have had a lower life expectancy throughout history, long before the advent of ultra processed food, or again how are people who train regularly eating compared to the general population? And you can’t even exclude the causality being on the other foot when it comes to mental health, ever heard of comfort eating? This is my way of saying statistics are never meant to be taken in a vacuum. There’s no need to demonize ultra-processed food further, let’s call it generally poorer in micro-nutrients, calorically dense, less satiating, easy to overconsume and generally low in protein. That’s more than enough of a demonization to create a link with all metabolically impacted conditions but as long as it fits your macros you can likely include a minority of your calories from ultra-processed foods without having any major impact on yourself in and of itself as long as you can get your micro-nutrients from the rest of your diet.
