Three very different videos from the same schizophrenic, Cecilia McGough

This woman is pretty amazing, but viewing her videos shows how her disease fluctuates. Her first one is a very lucid and professional Ted Talk, then she did an interview where she was actively hallucinating the whole time (she never looks at the camera) and finally one in 2020 where you can’t even tell she has schizophrenia. You don’t have to view the whole videos, just a minute from each one and you’ll see what I mean.

I followed her earlier and even chatted with her on facebook live stream. I don’t have any opinions about her though.

But I must tell during one of my episodes a couple of years back I bad mouthed her on instagram. Never went back to see that post again I feel totally embarrassed. That’s about it.

I follow her on Facebook and support the organization she started for students. She is amazing in sharing her struggles and being so open about what she goes through. She was going through some stuff during that interview with Special Books by Special Kids.

I saw both the TedX talk and the first SBSK interview and never realized that it was the same person. Not until I saw the third video did I make the connection. She said that she delayed the second interview with SBSK because she noticed that on the first SBSK interview comments on YouTube people were saying that they felt her disease was progressing since she seemed worse then than on her TedX talk previously, and she didn’t want the second interview to show her symptomatic because she didn’t want people to get the impression that the disease is progressive in her case. She just fluctuates I guess.

What interests me and is the reason I posted it is that the first video (TedX talk) inspired me to try and become high functioning, whereas her first SBSK interview made me feel better about being mostly asymptomatic in comparison to her. Sort of a better her than me thing. And in the second SBSK interview I’m just amazed at how lucid (and pretty) she is!

That’s good to know that she inspires you to become high functional again. So how are things going for you now… Are you working anywhere?

Also when I talked to her she said that she had an Indian boyfriend and that she would visit India soon.

I am on federal disability, and recently moved across the country from my hometown of Springfield, VA (northern Virginia) to Oakland, California.

I haven’t started working yet and probably won’t until Covid is over. Back in Virginia I fixed up and sold furniture I got at auction to turn a profit on Craigslist. It was under the table income. I am hesitant to try and work for a company part time because I have auditory hallucinations every day. They aren’t mean voices, they are either kind voices or harmless narration, but just the fact that I hear them distracts me.

I have a hard time imagining myself holding down a job while I keep hallucinating. I have been steadily improving since I got sick 6 years ago though, and if it keeps improving I should be ready for a college class or a part time job at a pizza place sometime early next year. I would really prefer to do it after Covid is over though, through a vaccine probably.

I think it’s really cool that you got the chance to talk to her!

I wish you all the best for your future. I hope that things improve for you soon.

I remember her from SBSK, but this is my first time seeing the 2020 update video. It sounds like she’s doing well.

Thanks for posting this!
