Thoughts on medical marijuana?

It’s legal here now,
I KNOW weed is not ideal for schizphrenia or psychosis,
but my doctor reccomended and even told me where to go for low THC stuff.
Is it a bad idea?
Has weed helped anyone here?
I’m kinda desperate for anything that helps,
I might give it a shot and let y’all know how it goes.
not much to lose, and it might improve my mood

My friend just had his first psychotic break after using medical marijuana for a month. He now thinks he’s married to Taylor Swift, and I recently spent all night in the hospital with him, as he tried to pull his “dark self” out from his own body. It’s horrible to see him like this.

Everyone reacts differently, but I think it’s super dangerous and high-risk.

I thought you were trying hard to get clean?

I’m not sure if it’s a good idea, but maybe you can try other forms of marijuana medicines (I heard about an oil that seems to help even with psychosis).

I occasionally use marijuana with no ill effects, used to use it heavily with no ill effects, but I recognize that when it comes to people with psychotic illnesses I may be the exception, not the rule. It helps me with anxiety and depression.

If you’re going to try it, maybe try a low-THC/high-CBD variety.

If you were to go to a medical dispensary, you will see the terms “sativa” and “indica.” Just FYI, sativa and sativa-dominant strains are known for the energetic head high, while indica and indica-dominant strains are known for the sedating body buzz. But yeah, I would start with something low THC, be it sativa or indica.

A friend of mine started smoking weed a month or so back. He was a year and a half sober and figured that weed was different enough from booze he’d be okay. Took him less than a month on weed to start drinking and blow his sobriety. His wife tossed his ass out of the house and he can’t see his kids now.

I had warned him of the risk when he started toking, but was told that I was “old and out of touch.”

Yeah, okay.

Just be aware that weed is one of those things that can work like an accelerant for any other problems in your life. Match to gasoline, etc.

As for medical marijuana. My first psychiatrist wrote me a prescription for it. It wasn’t too bad. As freakonaleash stated, it is not for everyone. I was recommended the Indica strain over the Sativa strain. It was years ago. I smoked daily for a few years and it helped me get out of depression. I would say it can be helpful but can also be harmful for people who suffer from schizophrenia.

I hadn’t smoked at all for the past two years until recently. I occasionally smoke now, maybe once or twice a month. It doesn’t feel the same as before. If you decide to seek it out I would recommend you not smoke in excess. My current psychiatrist is 100% against smoking marijuana. I didn’t really start smoking regularly until after my diagnosis. It did help a bit in my case but now I don’t feel like I need it.

If you suffer from paranoid thoughts, cannabis can increase that. If you have auditory hallucinations it becomes more difficult to differentiate between reality and delusion. At the risk of sounding like a hypocrite, I wouldn’t recommend it unless your psychiatrist is okay with it. Also as freakonaleash stated low THC high CBD pot is probably a better idea.

Guys, all talk about recreational drugs, even when used medically, must be recovery-oriented. That means no talking about how much you love weed. If you don’t use it medically and you’re not trying to recover from abusing it, don’t talk about it.

It isn’t legal where I live so the point is moot.

Personally I’ve quit benzos using marijuana.

Personal thoughts, Everybody is different.

Personal thoughts. I’m not sure if it’d be wise to take marijuana if you’re still thinking about getting high on other stuff. Not because anything but it can trigger you to a Relapse.

Personally, I used to hallucinate every time I smoked weed until I started naltrexone.

I still smoke pot although I’ve been clean the last few days for supply reasons.

I do nothing else other than caffeine and my meds.

If I were you, maybe you can ask about naltrexone now that the opiates are out of your system. Hey it’s saved my life and you are a prime candidate for the med…they only prescribe it to people off opiates for 4+ days. When I went on it my doctor asked me “you’re not doing heroin and not telling me…”. Otherwise you can’t go on it. But I took it for alcoholism and it’s saved my life. Honestly, can’t recommend weed to any schizophrenic not on naltrexone or else I’d be not accounting for some possible side affects I had. But I can say, and there are studies saying naltrexone reduces the psychoactive effects of weed. So I feel if you can reduce the psychoactive effects you can contain the anxiety using the thc. That’s how I feel it works for me. But I’m not a scientist just a patient

My 10 cent opinion.

‘Medical’ marijuana. Even if it had medical properties you could probably find similar (or bigger) improvements from say, dietary interventions.

Let’s not forget that cannabis is also addictive. Not sure quitting benzos because of cannabis is such a great trade-off. The people I see who are addicted to benzos generally do better than those who are addicted to cannabis.

I think marijuana is one of the factors that fueled my sz, but I’m not opposed to people who can handle it or use it medicinally. I’d like to try a very low THC/high CBD strain if ever available in my state. I bet it would help with my anxiety

I will use mild thc/ high cbd edibles occasionally, I’ve found it helps with anxiety and lowers my voices if they start to act up

It’s in no way a replacement for meds, but I feel moderate use is ok for me

I don’t know how psychiatrists may prescribe medical marijuana to schizophrenics. They don’t know it’s bad?

my psychiatrist didn’t prescribe it,
my doctor did.
for pain and anxiety and other things.
It’s the high THC that is psychoactive,
i’ve heard alot about CBD having antipsychotic properties and benefits.

It wasn’t a reply to you. I had to remove a post and just wanted to remind people of the rules.
