I tried to change my avatar, but my Internet Explorer did not allow me to upload an image and so I used the system assigned avatar, turns out that Meteor and I have the same avatar.
I think the default chooses first letter ‘M’ and a color. Your avatar and Meteor’s are slightly different in color tone.

Seems I have to keep the dimensions 119px X 119px to get it to work right on the site with some tweaking. Sometimes that means refreshing or getting out of the site clear the catch and logging back in again.

i had the same problem using internet explorer.
But worked with Google Chrome…
Get firefox. You can choose different backgrounds for the top of the page instead of just blank white. It doesn’t interfere or color the pages. They have super models in bikinis, there is one that is animated and it is the green number streams from the matrix. Mine is a picture of my spirit animal. Homer Simpson. 
There are thousands of choices.
the real problem with Avatar is everyone is blue!

I fixed my avatar problem by installing Google Chrome and it allowed me to change my avatar.
