The possibility of recovery

I was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 1975. Over the last 45 years I have been involved in just about every mental health situation except long term hospitalizations. From 1975-1993 I was hospitalized 13 times and have been “psychotic episode” free for 27 years. I am a college graduate, which I attended during the height of my illness, a Poet and an educational sponge. I believe, barring suicide, recovery is always a possibility through self-awareness, love from loved ones and a belief in the gifts of the Universe.
Although it might t seem impossible at times to overcome this condition, every diagnosed person must be encouraged to keep up the good fight for sanity and a restoration to health. This goes for loved ones and caregivers as well. Keep the faith even during setbacks and hospitalizations because I have learned from my own experience that the darkness is greatest before the dawn.
