The falsehood was spread to keep people from speculating that she died from a drug overdose, which was worse. A heart attack at her age is so unlikely that people would have speculated about drugs if not given something else to talk about.
Yeah, you’re right, her own publicist put out the rumor she died from choking on a ham sandwich in a press release to hide the truth, that her heart attack was likely caused by years of substance abuse.
Yeah, I heard those. The Rod Stewart one was probably false but I think there’s good reason to believe the one about Bowie and Jagger was true. But they were all top stars who should have been able to handle those rumors which were around while they were still alive. The one about Cass Elliot was around after her death and must have hurt her daughter and other people close to her.

There was an extremely nasty rumor going around about Alice Cooper while I was in high school. I don’t know if I can even say it here.
Well no matter the reason, she was a very talented lady and she passed too soon.

The most effed up myth I heard was that Marc Almond who is the lead singer of Soft Cell drank a pint of sperm.
I don’t know where it originated, but that was the rumour. I expect it was a homophobic slurr but still that is the worst myth I have ever heard in pop rock history.

In the seventies there was a rumor about Alice Cooper. The rumor was he was giving a concert and he held a contest to see who out-gross him and do something more gross than Alice Cooper. So a guy comes out of the audience and gets on stage and takes a dump. And Alice Cooper ate it.
I used to hear this rumor all the time.
