[The effect of various forms of folates on cognitive functions in patients

Folates are super-important for the development of babies in the womb.

Seems like they’re also good for cognitive functioning among those of us diagnosed.

prolonged use of folate in prophylactic doses for schizophrenia.

So… to prevent episodes, or to prevent transition from prodromal to schizophrenia? Or am I reading that wrong altogether?

Metafoline is folinic acid. There is a hypothesis saying that the presumably low levels of 5MTHF in the CSF in some patients may be treated with folinic acid, which gets around the usual blood-to-CSF transport route and thus is able to better increase the folate levels in the brain:

Mind that it’s only a hypothesis at this stage. Further, 5-MTHF supposedly helps some patients with resistant depression, also by sidestepping the usual blood-to-CSF route and increasing the levels of folate in the brain and the spinal cord. There is also no definitive proof of this. No definitive rebuttal either.

It’s an interesting sphere of study, “folate-related single carbon metabolism in psychiatric disorders”.
