An early Ken Loach film inspired by R.D. Laing’s ideas. Just to make it clear, I don’t pretend Laing and his fellow travellers had all the answers, but that their contribution is the part of the solution -social and existential factors- that tends to be neglected.
Mmm I haven’t ever seen one I really loved so far. A lot of the movies out there sensationalize it.
You might feel differently about this one. It is “dated” of course, but very sensitively done and thought-provoking.
A beautiful mind is my favorite. Russell Crow.
I will have to check it out @NotSeksoEmpirico
I saw a relatively recent one about R.D.Laing starring David Tenant “Mad to be Normal”. It gave quite a good balanced view of him.
I also saw it recently, David Tennant was bang on.
Love and Mercy tells the story of Beach Boy Brian Wilson.
He has schizoaffective disorder. A lot of it is sad but it has a very happy ending.
Clean, Shaven tells the tale of a severely mentally ill schizophrenic. I obviously have had some of the same symptoms but the movie makes them terrifyingly real.
He’s very ill but is terribly misunderstood by the people around him.
I will look them up, thanks.
Your welcome. Although Clean, Shaven is so terrifying as to have been put in the horror genre.
French favorite of mine “Amèlie”. It’s a feel good quirky rom com, And the disease is only ever portrayed In a playful light.
The main character shows classic signs, fanciful visions, voices, TV talks directly to her and gives her Idea’s. Clearly unaware subjectively as you her level of insight and how it effects her.
For me, Beautiful Mind, but there are other countless Tv shows and movies about schizophrenia or schizophrenic characters. They might not outright say it, but you can tell some characters are mentally ill.
Makes me think of the TV show “Travelers” and the first time traveler was schizophrenic and used as a guinea pig. I relate to it a lot. I’m also stuck in a schizophrenic body for eternity. Feels like consciousness transfer or reality switched into a Simulation after Mayan Prophecies of 2012…
I’ve got to admit I’ve never watched Amelie, maybe I should challenge my prejudices about the film.
I enjoyed Travelers too but I can’t say the same for Beautiful Mind.
I’ll check it out.
I just hope someone watches the film I linked so we can have a conversation about it.
I have always thought my favourite film Inland Empire by David Lynch has a thorough schizo flavour to it. But it’s very unorthodox, you won’t be seeing doctors or hear talk of delusions and diagnoses, medicine and all that. It comes closer to experiencing it than to a witness’ depiction of it.
How about the movie ‘Pi’. Loved it.
I keep hearing good things about the HBO series, I Know This Much is True.
I read the book and loved it. I haven’t seen the series yet though.
I liked the movie “Canvas” with Marcia Gay Harden because it was a very sensitive and sympathetic look at a woman with sz and how it affected her husband and son.
