Tell me about clubhouses

I saw in a few threads that people were talking about socializing at clubhouses.

I don’t think it’s a good match for me as I’m with my husband socializing a lot of the time unless he’s out of town. Also, the clubhouse used to be 15 minutes away and now it’s like 35 minutes away. So, it’s not easy to get to.

Still I’m curious. What do you think of them? What’s your experiences?

Thanks @Yellowdiamond.

The clubhouse I visited was filthy and run down, it was also frequented by many low functioning individuals.
I didn’t like it too much

Thanks @Wave. Yeah. My therapist said the people at clubhouses are in the hospital a lot.

There’s a mix of really ill people, and those who are trying to re-enter the workforce. There’s a lot of good things happening in Clubhouses.

I’m doubtful the clubhouse is for me. Tuesdays are my day off. On Tuesday, they have an employment group and wellness group. I’m already in the workforce and I’m doing good with wellness.

Anyway, I’m looking to get out to socialize and make new friends. I have a handful of girlfriends. Three out of the five I don’t see much. I’m going to look into hobby groups and am trying to reconnect in my women’s social group. I have another social group I’m in where I’m friends with the woman who runs the group. So, I have ways to socialize already. I’m just looking to add where it might be a good fit.

Edited: thank you to everyone who has responded.

My clubhouse is a non-profit, member-driven environment. We’re open every weekday 9-4 and serve breakfast and lunch. It’s free. We have TV, computers and Wi-Fi, and different arts and crafts groups. We have a mix of higher functioning individuals and lower functioning folks, but people can’t come in if they’re high or drunk. It’s a weapons-free zone.

Just this last year I was voted to become a board member at my clubhouse, and that involves board meetings, signing checks for the paid employees, and helping with writing grants. It’s a lot of responsibility for someone who, 4 years ago, was afraid to talk to other people at all.

Currently, we are looking for a bigger building for our clubhouse cuz our membership has expanded quite a bit. I like having the clubhouse cuz it keeps me from sitting at home all day or just wandering the streets. It’s been very beneficial for me.

That sounds nice.

Sounds great @WhiteRaven!

I was not welcome. I turned out to be a reminder to most there of the things they don’t have in their lives.

That’s too bad. At least you tried, so you know what it’s like.

I messaged the coordinator to ask some questions. She said she’d give me a tour just last week. I know I can just try it, but I’m skeptical. I just mapped it and it’s 30 minutes away, so a little closer than I thought. Still it’s an hour round trip. Well, I’ll think about it.

Thanks @shutterbug.

We have a clubhouse in my town. I’ve never been to it, but I should check it out.

I am going to our clubhouse since 1999, back than everyone was welcome, time have changed and for security reasons you need a referal from the doctor and some history. We developed some rules in the monthly clubhousemeetings so everyone can enjoy the clubhouse. The staff is great and we have lots of activities. For example some day we had a lady from some zoo introducing us to the birds of prey. I mean real Eagles, Owls etc…I read about it in the monthly newsletter. These days i go there sometimes to get some free food or need an office to do my business. Something like getting myself accommodation or a job.
