As someone who’s been through nursing school, I do not ever want to get my sons if I have them circumcised . Before my OB rotation I thought a circumcision was a quick little snip and then it was done. No. I encourage anyone who wants to get their son a circumcision to first watch videos on the procedure. The baby’s penis is smashed into this weird torture looking device, pinned with numerous clothespins, they stick a long needle looking thing down into the skin, it goes on. A lot of the time no pain medication is used at all or the doctor comes too late so the pain medication has already worn off so the babies are absolutely screaming in agony the whole time. All this for purely cosmetic reasons. Yes, there are actually practically no benefits to circumcision despite popular opinion,latest research is showing. The one thing it does is you can’t get phymosis if you have a circumcision (when your foreskin gets stuck closed) but this is an extremely rare condition. In fact circumcision just reduces sexual feeling.
I do not believe in putting an infant through such a procedure purely for the benefit of having their penis look a certain way. If when my sons get older they decide they want a circumcision for themselves then I will gladly support their decision, but I will not make a baby who cannot consent go through that torture and genital mutilation.
As a fellow nurse, I agree with you 100%. It is male genital mutilation. If it is wrong to mess around with women’s privates, then it should be the same for men.
