Taking lithium for the first time

To treat my mania, I’ve been prescribed lithium for the first time.

Doctor says I should do blood tests more frequently because I have hypothyroidism (which landed me in the hospital a few times) because lithium can affect the thyroid. I’m on a strong dose of synthyroid medications as a result. This is the first time I’ve ever taken bipolar related medication. Before I’ve been only diagnosed with schizophrenia and/or depression with psychosis.

So far I’m dizzy so I’ll avoid driving in the nighttime and sleep enough so that I can get some rest. I don’t want to cause car accidents on the freeway.

There is a bit more at stake than your thyroid when it comes to Lithium. The bloods need to be frequent to assess toxicity. Its quite rare and nothing to worry about, but they got to be safe!
