Is lithium a good med?

Is lithium a good med? How common are thyroid issues and is there a pill to take to reverse the thyroid issues? I might ask my doctor I’m on an antipsychotic but my diagnosis is bipolar ! Hmmm

I had hypothyroidism on lithium
And they gave me cinthroid
Lithium did nothing for me
When I went off lithium my thyroid returned to normal

I’ve heard good things too but that’s my personal experience with it

I’m sza bipolar type but I doubt that dx now. The bipolar aspect

Lithium helped except I shook so bad I couldn’t even bring a cup to my mouth or eat anything that required a fork. Couldn’t even sign my name. I went off of it and the shaking mostly went away but did some permanent damage.

Did you gain weight? Or have thyroid issues?

Are patients on lithium able to think? Like is it different than antipsychotics or similar?

Weight gain yes.

So the thyroid issues are temporary? And only when on lithium? Or is it permanent? I think my metabolism is already a lot worse than it used to be!

Lithium is a mood stabilizer not an antipsychotic

My main issues are mood issues!

I was on 900 mg of lithium for a year

Honestly felt it was a sugar pill

I had no effects from it

I was also on zyprexa, lamictal, klonopin and wellbutrin at the time.

I stopped the zyprexa cuz it had the worst effects I hated the feeling even tho it was keeping me stable. I stayed on the lithium tho. And still had my biggest psychotic episode I ever had.

I’m not blaming lithium. But it was 100% the reason for my hypothyroidism. When I stopped it. Yep it went back to normal. Saw a doc specialist for it and she confirmed lithium caused it. Maybe if u stay on it too long it’ll become permanent. Fortunately mine didn’t.

I took it for a month but along with haldol

I want to get off antipsychotics and just take something to calm my mood!

I know a woman whose been on lithium for years. She has an uncontrollable shake in her hand. She had to get her thyroid removed.,and it ruined her kidneys . I’d say its not a very good drug to be on long term

I was put on lithium in the hospital and felt better initially so they discharged me. I was also pushy to get out. Then two weeks later I nearly attempted suicide and landed back in the er and got put on latuda.

Lithium did wonders for my mood swings. No weight gain. Didn’t have issues with my thyroid but I was only on 1200mg for a year. Stopped taking it for some reason and I’ve been doing okay without it too

I was on Lithium for about 5 years. It did nothing for my mood issues I had at the time, and it ruined my thyroid. Now, I’m on Synthroid for life.

i was on lithium and got hypothyroidism and then they gave me l-thyroxine for it… now my thyroid is ok and i’m not on the lithium anymore.

For some bipolar patients, it’s a miracle drug. For me it did reduce my depression a bit.

And yes, you can think on lithium, but everything is kind of dulled down a bit.

I had a low metabolism, but after lithium, my thyroid gland stopped working and now I have to take thyroid hormones the rest of my life.

And yes - shaking hands, people thought i was an alcoholic.

yea same here… have to take l-thyroxine for the rest of my life… i always thought at first that if my thyroid was good again that i could stop taking the l-thyroxine but pdoc said that is not the case…
