Stem cells from adults function just as well as those from embryos

Donor age does not appear to influence the functionality of stem cells derived from adult body tissues, concludes a new review. The analysis of research on induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) finds that not only are typical signs of aging reversed in iPSCs, but cells derived from both older and younger donors show the same ability to differentiate into mature body cells. This validates iPSCs as a viable alternative to embryonic stem cells in regenerative medicine. Published in Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine, the study highlights the enormous potential of iPSCs derived from elderly patients to treat their age-related diseases – and indicates future areas of research for this relatively new field.

@far_cry0 you have been using the expression “holy cow” lately, which as far as I know is an English /American expression. I was just wondering if it has the same meaning in Nepal?

Nah JK.
Hopefully soon.

I think stem cell poses lot of ethical threats…

It might alter dna and rna… and makes people either stronger or weaker …!!! It may be possible when stem cell doesnt alter gene and just heal damage done in the brains.

This is so super complecated… noone really understands it…!!! Scientist puts us in dark…!!

@far_cry0 I am a faithful Jew,
morality is a very high priority for me,
and I think absolutely that people should have the power to control their genes/DNA.

I am trying to clean some today. Then maybe a nap.

Yes, people here sometimes say “Holy cow” instead of “Jesus Christ” because that is offensive to some if used as a swear.

i heard stem cells have to be taken when you are born and then reused when we age is that right?

That is one way to do it, but stem cells can be produced from adults. It is currently expensive and somewhat experimental - that is, not really mainstream yet.

They have not tested it for schizophrenic people.

They are doing trials in Alzheimer’s, autism, Parkinson’s, heart disease, arthritis and more, with some good results, but it’s not yet a mainstream treatment.

For autism they are mostly using cord blood which is saved from birth. For the rest, mostly stem cells generated from the patient’s own tissue (usually fat cells).
