Stelazine, anyone tried it?

I have been suffering a lot from insomnia and from health problems with Geodon (heart disease–severe hypertension and akathisia) and zyprexa (sleeping too much and eating too much). I want to give an old med like stelazine a shot so I can go off xanax for akathisia and propranolol for hypertension, and I want to sleep at night, I have been suffering severe insomnia.

Stelazine is my idea! It is great for anxiety and would also have me off benzos and beta-blockers. I am seeing the doc on tuesday and want to be informed by consumers YOU and the books and databases.

I don’t know anything about the drug but I just wanted to wish you luck on it.

Wasn’t quite as bad as Zyprexa for weight gain, but it was close. Also, wickedly dry mouth and it put my male bits on standby for over a year (an erection became theory rather than practice). You’ll also need lots of Kleenex for the plugged nose and Ex-lax for the plugged bowels. Finally, you’ll get the kind of anxiety that is common to Catholicism. Good times!

Lol ■■■■ dude

What are you on? Risperdal?

I tried one pill in the hospital, and told them that I felt it was like a ‘horse tranquilliser’ and didn’t take any more.

I might consider seroquel @Samp thanks for that tip

I have some in 25 mg for sleep but it and Geodon risk heart problems when taken together and I’m on a lot of Geodon

Maybe seroquel is the way to go

Geodon (we call it Zeldox in beaver country). It freaks out my cardiologist, but he can suck it. I’d rather die younger with all my marbles than drop down to a lower level of function. Quality of life has to count for something. The ■■■■■■■ DID convince my pdoc to take away my Effexor, so if I’ve been a bit more of a ■■■■■■■ lately, that’s why.

thanks for the replies @Samp, @everhopeful and @shutterbug

I am gonna push for stelazine, I just cannot take this crap with geodon anymore, and zyprexa is bad long-term.

It’s not just the insomnia, it’s the hypertension and akathisia and taking meds for both of those side effects. Its just too many pills and not enough power from all of them. I take all of them and still suffer insomnia and enough psychosis to be dissatisfied.

I was first on stelazine in the late 70s/early 80s. It gave me retrograde ejaculation. I think it was a little helpful at first but over time the effect wore off.

I’ve taken Trilafon (Perphenazine) for nearly 45 years. It is nearly Stelazine.

how it is working for you? I need to change to a 'zine from geodon (ziprasidone) because of health reasons and a lack of necessary sedation.

Haldol is spectacular. Have psychotic individual ranting in the ER and give a shot of Hldol, and in thirty minutes said individual is talking reasonably. Trilafon is the least spectular of all the First Generation Tranquilizers, but it has the best profile for long term use.

Trilafon takes week to get the ideal response.

Incidentally, Trilafon has a short term anti anxiety effect. In about six hours that’s over. But it has a long term antispsychotic effect. When I went off Trilafon in 1975, it took a full three months to get good and psychotic.

If I were to go to an older typical medication, I would probably try out perphenazine - Trilafon.

Its relatively safe for a typical antipsychotic and has great anti anxiety properties at certain doses.

When first got ill I was put on stelazine age 18 till age27
I did pretty well on it as u say it good for anxiety but doesn’t do much for mood however mood can be fixed with sunshine and cbt
I’m on clozaril now and doing ok
Stelazine was quite harmless compared to some new meds I’ve tried

I’ve been on Risperdal only.

I wish you the best of luck!
