I went to my sisters today to celebrate my nephews 26th birthday. It was just me, my sister, my nephew, my brother-in-law, my other nephew, his wife and their two-month old twin girls. It went good. It was no big deal, we talked, we ate, we gave my nephew his presents. One thing that happened that was funny, is that during the party they gave me a baby to hold. I’ve never had kids myself and I’m not around them much and so I was a little uncomfortable holding her which made people laugh. But the baby was totally at home in my arms and she nestled her head in my chest and went to sleep.
Oh yeah, I think everybody there is so used to seeing me be mellow that they forget some of my history. My family are cool and treat me fine but I got some guilty pleasure when my older nephew told a story about how he chased a thief and then I chimed in and one-upped him with my story about being hand-cuffed and being put in the back seat of a cop car and almost going to jail in my drug days. I liked the surprised looks I saw on peoples faces.
