Hi @shutterbug, I know you used to operate a photography business during your past and wanted an opinion without delving too much about a photography service. What are the conditions in regards to a “financial deposit” and payment in full once photography services are completed? In particular, is the “deposit” usually half the amount of the entire professional photography service fee?

I’m not a photographer nor do I offer online services. The following is only a personal opinion.

If you’re going to hire a professional:

  • first check their background (if possible) and their previous customers’ satisfaction level.
  • second, try to break down the assignment into smaller chunks; if you’re happy after the first delivery, you may continue the collaboration.
  • third, if possible, don’t pay cash; prefer transfers to a trusted bank; and whatever the payment method, ask for a receipt.

Some photographers ask for up to half up front. I never did. I figure if I shake hands on something that is good enough. I always came through on my end. Had a couple clients cancel, but they were legit emergencies.
