im not sure i want to because then they might be dismissive of any concerns i have. and since im not taking medicine right now its not like i would also have to not tell them about my medications. idk if i should or not. what u guys think?
im filling out the online intake paperwork right now and idk if i should add it
I would. Its better to be honest with your doctor so as to get the best help. Schizophrenia isnt really something someone should neglect to mention to their doctor.
Ive never really had any issues from revealing it to a gp. They can see that im mostly in remission and have insight. So they dont have reason to question things i say. Maybe ive just have a good run of luck with various doctors?
I’ll add a poll. should i tell my dr.
- Yes
- No
always inform doctor of existing conditions even if its something that requires a specialist
Yes for me it explains my communication issues anxiety non-presence, depending on whatever symptom I might have during the visit.
Where are you based? if you are in the UK, they will have records wherever you go which ever doctor you see.
I voted yes, but I understand your concern. I told an ophthalmologist that I had schizophrenia, and he said, “oh my!” He exclaimed. I think that was unprofessional. His assistant lunged toward me kind of like I was dangerous. I was not displaying unusual behavior. This reaction was strictly because I stated I have schizophrenia, and I was possibly remembering I had a blind spot, but wasn’t sure if I really did in reality. He was not seeing a blind spot in the test that I took, and he said he would check my records from my previous doctor and would call me if he saw a test result with a blind spot in my old doctor’s records. I never got a call that he saw that. Anyway, He did not correct his assistant’s reaction.
There’s definitely a stigma with schizophrenia.
However, my primary doctor told me if I can’t tell her I have schizophrenia (only recently did I find out my diagnosis changed to schizoaffective, depressive type), then why would I see her? However, she has a good attitude and viewpoint about schizophrenia. She said you take a medication for Sz just like anything else.
I’m not sure it’s really that simple because I always hear a voice no matter the medication. My psychiatrist knows I have audio, and a little bit of visual hallucinations on medication, and she says that might always happen.
By the way, I don’t tell my doctors my diagnosis outside of my primary care doctor. She also happens to be my rheumatologist.
Yes it’s important to notify all doctors about all your diagnoses including your primary mental illness.
I just tell doctors that I have bipolar disorder.
It’s not far from the truth plus it’s less stigmatizing than schizoaffective
Is this a trick question? Your doctor needs to know everything.
hes prob not 151515151515
Irrelevant I said no but the way I said is this: if you tell your doctor that your schizophrenic they’re not going to take your symptom seriously as seriously as they would if you if they thought you were mentally healthy. So maybe wait until after they’ve diagnosed you to tell them that you’re also schizophrenic
It’s like that where I live as well
i put it down and i regret it
i just hope it doesnt negatively affect my physical health care
Yes. To get decent treatment you need full disclosure and usually out here your gp has a list of your meds even though they don’t prescribe them as your shrink does. It’s a no brainer to disclose.
I didn’t tell my dentist what medication I was taking at first. I don’t want to be considered a crazy person.
I saw a new primary care doctor once and didn’t immediately tell him I had schizophrenia. He later found out that I had Medicare due to my disability and questioned me awkwardly. He had trouble trusting me after that because I didn’t disclose that info and it ruined the trust in our doctor-patient relationship.
I found a new primary care doctor and told him immediately. He handled it so kindly and asked lots of empathetic questions, like what it was like for me to live with the condition.
There are people whom we shouldn’t immediately disclose something so personal to, but your doctor isn’t one of them.
I’m in the VA system and my diagnosis, sza, is in all my records. So all my doctors and caregivers know about it.
always be honest. they will figure it out eventually
