Should I risk a doctor led stopping of meds?

My mum says it is ridiculous the amount of meds I am on. She thinks I am unjustifiably scared of losing my welfare if I come off meds. In this regard she might be right - I don’t know.

But part of me does want to ditch the meds. But I really don’t want hospital again.

Thoughts anyone? J

Talk to your doctor about lessening your med’s. I wouldn’t try to come off them completely, though.

just be careful if you let your doctor lower meds. my old pdoc lowered my meds and I started having symptoms again especially depression. but she did it without telling me that she was lowering them I didn’t find out until I picked up the prescriptions.

My doctor was anti medication, and took me off all my meds. I was fine at first. I was happy I didn’t have to take meds and I felt more clear headed. But now months later I feel like to need meds again. Nothing too strong though… Idk I just wish I could find the perfect med and dosage. I don’t want to have to get involved with the whole thing again. Finding a new dr (I moved states from my old one) and trying out the new meds until I decide I feel normal again, whatever “normal” is…

But if you read some of my posts you will be able to tell I need to be on something… Lol

Don’t be daft jimbob … hang in there till iti-007. We all want to ditch meds, but then we’ll end up thinking we can fly and jump off a building.

What are you on, James? My philosophy is the lowest effective dose of the safest effective meds. I think coming off entirely is a terrible idea, but lowering might be reasonable and wise.

Am on:

Depixol 60mg
Seroquel 600mg
Prozac 60mg
Gabapentin 2400mg
Buspar 40mg
Procyclidine 10mg

I think this is way too much.

I would like to quit everything but the depixol and maybe up this to 100mg.

If clozapine failed, I’d count myself lucky that you’ve found a winning formula. Listen to your doctor and yourself, not your mother (I’m sure she’s great, but not medically trained I assume)

that is too many med dude. The reason may be that those meds are cancelling each other out. I would ask about the new partial agonists, they have rave reviews from those who respond to them. I took the chance and I am on one and it works pretty well. After looking at my notes on pharmacology…and then consulting a database because you’re obviously not in the US…man those are cancelling each other out, back to the drawing board!

GABApentin man…that means neuropathic pain often due to diabetes. That one I would stay on! My dad have neuropathy and he takes it.

I think you should ask about a new medication for schizophrenia because you’re on too many, and less is better.

clozapine time perhaps? have you tried it?

I was on too many meds myself at one point and found a new one and am well and happy to be back in charge of my body and mind.

How long are you taking these meds? And how long are you stable with these meds?
(I am asking same questions my doctor asked)

Right now I’m desperately hoping my new pdoc lets me do a full cold-turkey off my meds. I’m newly, tentatively dx’d with schizoaffective disorder, but with the symptoms (especially neurological) that I’m having it’s impossible to tell what’s a new symptom, what’s a side effect of the meds and what is an aftereffect of the ECT I had earlier in the year. I’ll probably get worse when I get everything out of my system, but then at least we’ll know that it’s all legit symptoms and we can get a more accurate DX and start back on one medication at a time… I hope.

My current cocktail:

Lithium
Welbutrin
Zoloft
Prazosin
Trazodone
Synthroid

Been pretty stable on these meds for about 3 years. Is just too many meds in total.

I have no problem staying on a single AP - my choice would be the depixol. Would like to Jack the rest in.

Thanks for the info @mortimermouse - great as always.

I was on clozapine for a couple of years but with poor results. My best times have been on this med regime but I really don’t think it is sustainable.

How about quitting everything but the gabapentin and depixol. I am fully aware I need a strong AP but like you say my current meds are probably acting against each other.

Sometimes less is more.

PS depixol has been my most effective AP. Have been on aripiprisol but wasn’t strong enough.

Nice. Tell your doctor about it, you have been stable three years. He or she may reduce your meds.

I wish you good luck with whatever you decide to do @Jimbob.

I don’t recommend going off all of your meds.

When I forgot to take my meds in the past I became very psychotic in these situations.

Now it’s very hard to me to forget to take my meds and with good sleep habits I think that I should improve.

I’m very stable in this moment.

If I do come off these meds I am going to do it real slow and gradual. Learned that from past experiences.

Jimbob, please don’t come off meds. If you want to adjust them, or try other ones, then fair enough. But don’t actually come off them.
