I’ve been employed for most of the last 38 years albeit mostly part time though I have had full time jobs.
I got my Associates Degree.
Lived independently for 20 years but I am currently in supported housing.
Lived by myself in a studio for six years.
I’ve had friends and a girlfriend before.
Flew back East a few times.
Been driving steadily since 1997 with only one accident.
Been at my job 11 years.
The last time was 12 years ago, but I used to regularly drive my dad and my sisters to the airport when they went on trips and then pick them up when they returned. I count that as a success because they were really depending on me and it was a responsibility that I came through on.
I also housesat for them many times.
About 8 years ago my sister started her own small business as a stager and hired me to drive the moving truck and load and unload furniture. Again, it was a lot of responsibility and she depended on me.
When my boss used to take time off at my janitor job, he used to leave me in charge of the crew from anywhere to two days to more than a week. And he told me I did a good job.
I had a crack problem but I got clean and sober in 1990.
I was the best, fastest worker at my truck unloading job at Sears for 2 1/2 years.
When I was taking an English Literature class I wrote a 1000 word essay that not only did I get an A on but the teacher asked if she could use my essay in all her future classes as an example of how an essay should be written.
I’ve done many things that were hard to do that could be looked upon as successes for a schizophrenic that a non schizophrenic might take for granted i.e. going to parties or doing other social events or doing a particularly good job on something at work etc.
GPA 4.11 aka 3.70 on 4.0 scale. Hoping for a scholarship in graduate school!
Bachelors Degree. US Army Honorable Discharge … 100% VA Disability Rating. Somehow survived being plotted against (for example: US Army wanted to send me somewhere to die because I was deemed expendable [mental limitations]). They didn’t know I had Schizophrenia and neither did I (I was informed through the VA health care system).
Prior to Schizophrenia:
- Graduated from a technical school with a 2-year diploma
Post Schizophrenia:
- Admitted to University and or College (learned a lot in various fields for 5 years but didn’t graduate)
- Certified in computer related hardware & software
- Currently employed
- Drive a vehicle to & from work
Achieved BTEC business and administration level 3 distinction star
Successfully completed the first year of a management degree
