Sex hormones and oxytocin augmentation strategies in schizophrenia: A quantitative review

CONCLUSIONS:

Estrogens and selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) could be effective augmentation strategies in the treatment of women with schizophrenia, although potential side effects, partially associated with longer duration use, should be taken into account.

Future trials are needed to study long-term effects and effects on cognition.

Read it yesterday or the day before. Inconclusive thus far, but barking up an interesting tree, considering oxytocin’s effects upon attachment and bonding, as well as empathy and compassion. To the extent that we can tell, the mindfulness-based cognitive psychotherapies appear to up-regulate oxytocin flow. Dan Siegel’s been on top of this for a while. I think Alan Schore, as well. And if those two are sniffing at it, I suspect Dan Stern’s got his nose in there, too. (All three are big time into affect regulation and the chemicals involved.)
