Sensitive to certain sounds

Over the years I’ve become sensitive to certain sounds and noises. I was never like this growing up, but is it possible for my autism or schizophrenia to manifest in a way that makes me sensitive to noise? It’s really come on lately.

Any insight or input would be appreciated. I’m gonna talk to my pdoc about it next week

I used to be sensitive to noise when I was prodromal

I’ve heard and read that autistics can be sensitive to noise. I really don’t want to use earbuds or headphones when out and about, as I like to be aware of my surroundings

Certain noises are even more aggravating now than when I was younger. Off-key singing for example. And that seems to be a prominent staple of the Brit TV my wife watches.

I know what you mean about certain noises being aggravating – for me, it’s dogs in my neighborhood that never. stop. barking. Just drives me up the wall

I use high fidelity ear plugs. It reduces bothersome noise but i can hear everything perfectly fine

My noise sensitivity went away with meds. When I take Ldopa it comes back, it has to do with dopamine for me

@Tulane did the ear plugs work? I live in a studio apartment and the fridge sound is unbearable. So is the “silent” clock which is not very silent. So are the neighbors’ squeaking doors which I want to break every time I hear them entering or exiting their apartments.

@Lefty I was putting away food from a frying pan into a storage container and every time the spoon touched the pan, I could hear that metal clanking sound reverberating in my right year, it was VERY unpleasant.

Schizophrenia can cause noise sensitivity, especially in those who hear audio hallucinations. I’m on 20 mg of Abilify and it helps a lot with the noise sensitivity. When I was on a lower dose of Abilify, I used musician’s earplugs when I was working at one place. They were a huge help. They cut down noise by 15 db and also blocked the higher pitched sounds. Before that, everything was so loud, and I couldn’t concentrate well.

Can you complain to bylaw about the barking dogs? In my country, they’ll send a warning to the neighbour, and if it persists, they’ll fine them.

I tried the earplugs when I got them, and they sorta work. They’d be better if I were at a concert or something. They just kind of muffle the sound. They may work for the issues you described.
