A quick Google search said 25 years less than the average life expectancy of 78. How old is everyone here?

That number is skewed because life expectancy factors in the people who die of suicide. So if you have someone die of suicide at 20 it lowers the number greatly. That said schizophrenics probably still have health problems that lower the average age people die of old age from things like diabetes. Also I’m 31.

I’m 21 and became ill in November and already fell it take a toll on my health going from a fit young man to now

My uncle also had schizophrenia and had it appear in his life at the same age as mine did. He died in his early 60’s from lung cancer. In the end he refused treatment because he thought it was the doctors who were making him sick. He had issues with med compliance. I wish he could have found something that worked for him and stick with it, then maybe he would have had a happier, longer life.

If you want to live longer and beat the average
- give up smoking
- make your regular / family doctor your best friend
Get regular blood tests from your regular doctor.
It’s all preventable. And of course, stay on your meds.

But seriously. I’m 55 years old and I was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 1980 at age 17.
Just remember, sometimes statistics are wrong or vague. There’s exceptions to every rule.
You’re 34. Don’t spend the rest of your life planning or worrying that you will drop dead when you turn 50. If you take a little care of yourself like eating right and exercising, you may live quite a few years past 55.

Can you imagine if they made aps that didn’t cause weight gain and Parkinson’s symptoms, no heart abnormalities or raised prolactin/cholesterol ?
All we would have to do is diet and exercise like everyone else give up the smokes and take up a sport because no more stiffness and weight gain.
No flattened emotions or blunted facial expressions,
No more sexual side effects or feeling creepy from the medicine. It would be a great gift that big pharma could give us all, like here! Here’s your life back kids!
Go find work, get laid make new friends.
The meds zap people’s will to live. What is someone supposed to do if they can’t have a sex drive?
Smoke, drink, kill ourselves.
The illness would be much easier to handle without antipsychotics like we have now.
If they worked well no one would be able to tell we had conditions because we wouldn’t get that wierd flat look and stereotyped movements.
The meds we have now completely suck…

Longer than we want.
I’m 31, hoping to live 30 years more. The lifetime depends much on healthy lifestyle, that many of people with schizophrenia lack.
Something like 20 years less than the average. Remember , folks are getting smarter , there’s alot more education, people are using meds more precisely.
I think that stat will improve over time. There will more than likely be better meds too.
I think that the med has a bad influence on my heart. I have enormous difficulties to walk up slope. I can’t walk on plain surface too for a few years. I think my heart is worn out I have angina often have chest pain after taking ap for some time. I’m afraid I won’t live as long as my sibling. But I would play safe and assume that I would live up to 90.

John Nash died at 86 in a car accident. I wouldn’t get too wrapped up in numbers and statistics.

It’s also influenced by the number of sz’s who smoke. At the assisted living center where I live at least 80% of the people smoke.

I’m 50. I don’t take medication that sometimes add to premature death by causing diabetes and heart conditions, etc. But, I’ve been so stressed for so much of my life that I’m surprised I don’t have high blood pressure or heart disease… We’ll see.

A lot of homeless people are homeless. Being homeless can take many years off your life. This will skew the statistics also.
