Schizophrenia and smell: How is smell affected?

I had distorted smell during my first psychosis. Everything smelled like a sweet rotten perfume. It faded after medication though.

Also I’ve had reduced or lacking sense of smell on moderate to high doses of zyprexa. Now on a low dose of zyprexa, perception of smell is normal, but still a bit weak.

I smelled things when I thought some bad things were happening…it happens…

As the years go by my ability to smell gets less and less. I’m not really sure of the cause.

I don’t know if anyone else has experienced this, but my body actually smells different when I’m psychotic than it does when I’m “normal”. It’s like all the adrenaline that’s released gives me a different odor…idk, tho, it may just be a misperception.

“schizophrenia can affect a person’s ability to smell and how they perceive smells.”

Because many schizophrenics don’t shower or bathe that often…their nose becomes accustomed to the foul scent.
