Schizophrenia and Alcoholics anonomous

Hey guys and girls,

I was diagnosed with schizophrenia 3 years ago at age 30. I’ve been a binge drinker since I was 15 and couldn’t get through social events without being drunk. I’ve since been on medication for schizophrenia and depression. I found that once I got my drinking under control through Alcoholics anonomous (5 months sober!) my symptoms of schizophrenia and paranoid thinking lessened. Is there anyone else in this forum in AA? Also, if you have schizophrenia and are currently drinking/using substances I highly recommend giving AA a try. I think you will be happy with the results. The program is amazing and the people you meet are even better!

Thanks,

Kyle

Thanks! And congrats on the 6 years. That’s impressive! I hope to get there one day. Do you have a sponsor?

I’m an addict with 30 years clean. I got clean in AA until I found some CA meetings later on. Even after having some time clean I still attended AA groups. I’ve also been to many NA meetings.

No, no sponsor. Never had one which is probably unusual / ill advised !

Congratulations to you on the 5 months. That’s amazing if you’ve been drinking since you were 15.

@77nick77 who posted above is the record holder here with 30 years sober I think.

But at the end of the day we’re all just taking it 24 hours at a time.

I first went to AA in 2003 but had a slip 6 years ago where I got drunk. So that was a sharp reminder that it’s just one day at a time.

What does the research say?.. alcohol/drug use can cause schizophrenia or schizophrenia is determined from birth? I read a book called surviving schizophrenia, the author didnt want to definitely say it was one or the other. What are your thoughts?

The jury is still out. I believe that people tend towards alcoholism if they are already struggling with mental illness symptoms, and then the alcohol magnifies existing problems. I don’t think perfectly healthy neurotypical people fall into addictions. Addictions are a coping behavior, and usually arise because of underlying conditions or negative experiences.

Schizophrenia sobered me right up. Paranoia was too much.

I have been sober since 2009.

Glad you found AA.

You are welcome to join our online AA meeting for those with M.I., sir:

That’s the link to our private Facebook page that supports the online meeting (one weekly meeting now, more on the way).

Welcome to the forum!

Well, My humble opinion is that alcoholism and schizophrenia are separate issues. One doesn’t cause the other.

Most people in AA meetings are surprisingly “normal” and have no mental illness. Most. So most alchoholics don’t need a mental illness to fall foul of alcohol.

Also alcohol doesn’t cause schizophrenia either. Nobody knows what causes it.

Does being schizophrenic make you more likely to hit the bottle? I don’t know. Good question.

I was never an alcoholic but my wife still is but I drank a lot. I was a social drinker.

I do stupid ■■■■ when I drink and the paranoia was too much to handle. Schizophrenia made me stop drinking on my own.

Yo. Fellow friend of Bill W. Sobriety date is Feb 15, 1992. Also have SZ.

Hey. I used glucinogenes and opiates and alcohol with amphetas and canabinol. I was in the AA program. This is a cool program. I’m 7 years sober. The disease was diagnosed 4 years ago. I am sure that my lifestyle greatly influenced the disease.

Tried it. Too many sob stories.

I’ve quit many times, and have gone over a year not drinking beer,
never drank, or rarely when raising my kids,

but now I’m on anti-alcohol pills (not the kind that make you get sick if you drink) and I’ve totally got a new life, though a young one,

2 and half months no beer.

Welcome to the forum, hope you post more, or comment.

April is Alcohol Awareness Month.

welcome to the forum…yeah i agree AA is great

I thought it was common knowledge that schizophrenics tend to have more substance abuse problems as a group than the general population.
