Alcohol and schizophrenia

How many of you drink alcohol? I used to drink often, but now I haven’t had a drink since Easter weekend. Do you think it’s fine, long-term, for people with schizophrenia to drink alcohol? I worry about it affecting my cognitive ability and recovery. Would it be better to continue to not drink despite living in a country where drinking is part of our culture?

my wife decided to take an oath to abstain from alchol until a certain event takes place. So now when I want a glas of wine, I have to drink it alone without her drinking along with me. Its been like that for several months, and I have been driniing a lot less because it just isnt fun to drink alone. So I think thats ruined for me until further notice. I do not have seen any advantages from drinking less often. I never had a problem with it but I feel a certain enjoyable moment has been missing in my life I never drink more than a glas or two of wine or one drink or two in one setting.

I don’t think alcohol will help with recovery from any mental illness, but if you have a boring life and having a drink makes you feel happy, it can give you something to look forward to each day.
Drinking in excess or getting drunk is not good for anyone, even if they are not mentally ill.
Also make sure alcohol doesn’t interact with your medication.

I’ve been drinking alcohol (8 beers) a day for the last two months. It’s the only thing that helps with my depressive, negative and social symptoms…

I love it. wish i could drink everyday of my life.

Only drunk 3 times this year and going strong

Naltrexone will make you hate alcohol!! Although won’t make you stop drinking completely.

Since giving up alcohol, I’ve lost a ton of weight, I have more energy, and I feel more stable. Alcohol interacts poorly with most APs, and it can make hallucinations worse for some people.

I would also like to remind everyone here that it is the strict policy of this site not to talk about abusing alcohol except in a recovery-based context. It tends to be triggering for all the folks struggling with alcoholism.

yeah I drink a lot.

Usually since 2017, I drink when I go out partying (3 -4 glasses, not more) Plus in clubs and stuff, the alcohol is so little %

Now When I am home, -at night I drink a glass or two of something light such as gin and soda / a glass of wine, honey wine, almond baileys etc. with ice.

I notice Vodka makes me so sick even if I have just a glass.
