My roommate told me last night about Flashfood. They have an app and if your local grocery store participates you can buy food for half price. It’s select food that’s expiring that day or in a few days. I tried it out today and got a small tub of clam chowder, a small tub of minestrone soup and two calzones. They were all expiring today but I got them all for $13.00 and I ate some of them and they were good. All for half price, a great way to save money.
I tried the app but they don’t have any locations in Alaska. That’s too bad cuz i would’ve definitely benefited from lower food prices. Everything is so expensive now…
I just did the opposite of saving money lol, I’m waiting for Burger King to be delivered by Uber Eats. 5 dollar divery fee, plus a tip, plus the price of the food. Its a lot of money for something I eat all in one sitting.
Do you have any food salvage stores near you?
I didn’t find any salvage stores near where i live, but i do use the local food bank’s “Food is Medicine” program…you get a letter from your doctor that lets you get up to 5 lbs of fresh produce each weekday. A lot of times the choices aren’t in very good condition but other times they have really great produce! I have used overripe bananas to make banana nut bread, baked up bags of cauliflower and broccoli, and found i have a love of blemished mangos (they taste SO good)! It’s really a good program and has helped me eat healthier.
I also sometimes get emergency food boxes from the food bank (you can get 10 per year), and those have canned goods, milk, cereal…those kind of items. I get food stamps, too, but only $77 a month, so it doesn’t go far. But by using the Food is Medicine and eating some lunches at the clubhouse, i am VERY fortunate that i am not going hungry. I just can’t afford to buy a lot of expensive things like cookies, chips, or cheese. Still, i am luckier than a lot of folks up here…
I wonder if you could just ask at your local grocery store if you could purchase things that were going to expire at a discount if they would let you. Like talk to the manager. Seems like it would be in their interest, but maybe if it’s just one person they wouldn’t do it.
