Risperidone and insomnia?

I was prescirbed a 2mg dosage of risperidone a few weeks ago to stave off a marijuana induced psychosis and began to lose sleep the first couple weeks, I told my doctor and was prescribed 3mg for the lack of sleep. I took the 3mg once and was up almost the entire night with racing thoughts. I decided to go back to the 2mg and told my doctor I was doing so. A few days passed and I noticed that it still wasn’t helping so I quit taking it cold turkey. Now in the weeks past I have still been experiencing insomnia, some days worse than others. Is this a common side-effect, and if so what measures can be taken to resolve this insomnia episode? Also do cigarettes play a part in insomnia? I ask because I am a regular smoker and I’m unsure if continuing to smoke them is prolonging the lack of sleep.

I would really appreciate advice and experiences

Please and Thank you

Risperidone should not be giving you racing thoughts.
This could be a symptom of your disorder.

You are no longer on Risperidone but still experiencing insomnia, again this could be another symptom.

I would consider continuing seeing a psychiatrist and discuss medications.

There are other APs besides Risperidone.

Good luck @Risperidontquestionmark

I have found some APs to be a bit activating and have given me insomnia. Can’t remember if respiridone did.

You say it’s for cannabis induced psychosis. Have you just stopped smoking weed because that can cause insomnia too.

During my psychosis episode, I had insomnia and risperidone did not work. Then I changed to Olanzapine. It solves the problem.

If you were a chronic marijuana user, and you abruptly stopped, this can cause sleep problems.

Try taking Risperdal in the morning rather than at night. A sedating antidepressant at bed time may also be helpful.

I stopped smoking weed a couple weeks ago, I hadn’t considered it as a factor. The sleeplessness definitely increased after I quit

Im wary of olanzapine because of all of the stories about side effects on the internet

How much did you use? Daily?

Risperidal knocked my ass out when I first started taking it. But insomnia is nothing to mess with if you are prone to phycosis. I’d be getting some sleeping pills. Lack of sleep is what brought on my first episode.

Less than a gram semi-regularly, almost daily

When I started risperdone I slept ALL the time.

It’s probably due to lack of weed. These sleep problems are only supposed to last a couple of weeks.
