well i have rice, both brown and white, i know they say brown is healthier but i actually believe white is easier to digest. anyways, that’s not the point. my rice and beans is a little bland. so i’ve been adding what i have to it to make it more palatable. like marinara sauce, or salsa. it’s ok, it’s a cheap meal that gives me a bit of energy is the main thing but just curious about the rest of you. does anybody have any delicious rice and beans recipes that they like?
I buy the baked beans that already are spiced up. My favorite is sweet and tangy and I also like the maple beans. Sometimes I add a bit of ketchup or bbq sauce to add extra tang or sriracha sauce for a bit of zing. I eat white rice. I really dislike brown rice.
I am not a soul food person, like the food but don’t cook it a lot, but if the Rue is good then its a hit. my mom cooks Cajun food all the time.
interesting. will look for that when i go to the store next week. yeah i don’t like brown rice either, but eat it, because it’s supposed to be good for me…haha.
Chili powder, cumin, garlic, and onion powder go together. Garlic, oregano, thyme, rosemary, and onion powder go together. Diced tomatoes can be added. you can cook the rice in coconut milk and mango juice for a dessert type dish. Yellow curry powder, dried coconut/coconut milk, ginger, and cayenne pepper can go together (rice only, on beans I can’t even imagine how gross it would be).
But what spices do you have on hand? There are loads of combinations. I only mentioned my favorites.
mom took most of the spices when they moved out a couple years ago. i don’t have much, just cayenne, salt and pepper, sea salt, seasoned salt. i know it’s pathetic, i used to buy herbs and spices but i haven’t for a couple years, that is all she left me. believe it or not i’ve been living on $20 dollars a week in groceries, so some spices may be out of my budget until i get a job, depending on the brand they can get pricey. i can afford about $50 a week. but have taken drastic measures to save money.
Seasoned salt can go a long way. But if you plan on surviving on rice and beans, you’ll also want at LEAST a jar of taco seasoning. I make my own, but if you have nothing yet it’s cheaper starting out to just by a premixed spice blend. Taco blend, Italian blend, Asian blend, etc.
ok thanks for tip.
Slap ya mama red beans and rice is really good. (No, I’m not telling anyone to slap their mom, this is the name of the brand.) They also have good seasoning for chicken and I even tried it on steak and it was good.
haha yeah i remember @TomCat mentioning slap ya mama in the past. i don’t know if i’ve ever seen it before in stores here, will take a closer look next time. thanks.
I’m surprised when people ask for recipes sometimes. Because it takes about 60 seconds to find a recipe yourself online for just about anything you want to cook. When I want a recipe for rice, beans, soup, stew, omelots, pasta, cooking hard boiled eggs, egg nog, waffles, meat dishes etc. Most of the time I just type in "easy recipe for ______(fill in the blank) and I’ll get a couple dozen choices. It’s that simple.
The reason I would say to do a search yourself instead of using a recipe one of us gives you is because if you peruse a recipe yourself you can see exactly what ingredients you need and exact directions on how to cook it. That way you can see what you need to get at the store for ingredients and if the ingredients are too expensive or hard to get, you just go to a different recipe until you see one that just has a couple of ingredients that are easier to get.
You also can read the directions on how to cook it and if it looks too hard or you don’t have the equipment to make it you just move on to the next recipe until you find one with cheaper, easier, ingredients and easy directions only using a pot or two or a pan.
Cooking is no big deal, it’s not a secret or some mysterious thing. My motto has always been, “If I can read, then I can cook.” On most recipes, they explain exactly what you need to cook them and how to make them in clear, easy steps in the proper order. It’s that simple. Once you get comfortable cooking and following recipes then you can branch out and try other harder, better, fancier dishes. And you can save your favorite recipes to try again another time if you want it. You will collect a few recipes that you really like and whip them up at your leisure and it will be easier each time because you already know how to do it. But for rice or beans or pasta just type in your search bar, “easy recipes for beans”, or “pasta” or rice etc.
I love brown rice and black beans in my Instant Pot. I put in a chicken or beef bullion powder before cooking so that gives it a bit of flavor. I may add additional salt after cooking and may even use a generous portion of soy sauce. I’ve eaten it for a long time so I’m used to it but when I started eating it with no added spices I thought it was bland as ever.
You would be wise to invest in some garlic powder, cumin, and chili powder and if you have the money some coriander too. Those will make good flavors along with what you already have to spice up your beans. If you can only afford two things get the garlic powder and cumin first month and the chili and coriander second month. Then you’ll have spices for awhile. Every couple months buy one as you start to run low.
I make red beans and rice…I use canned red beans and add cayenne, salt , pepper , oregano and a diced up small ham…add chopped onion too…I add red wine to the water and it makes the beans delicious…
