Relating to people with other mental illnesses besides SZ/SZA (LONG POST)

Recently I published an article on a mental health site about a mistake I made going off my meds. The people who run that site (although struggling with mental illness) do not have SZ or SZA and may not be on antipsychotics. I felt that they judged me for going off my meds, so I could lose weight. As vain as that decision was admittedly, I feel like other meds do not cause as much weight gain as an AP. They cannot relate to the obesity brought on by an antipsychotic, so who are they to judge? That being said, I appreciate this site where I can relate specifically to other SZ/SZA people. Do you ever have a hard time relating to people with other mental health diagnoses?

Somewhat, I don’t really know what I have at this point. It feels like I have some psychosis characteristics but then what I describe to my doctors they tell me I don’t have anything unordinary or thst they are worried about. I’ve been diagnosed with OCD,bipolar, etc but I feel like I have some SZ characteristics. Hopefully they don’t develop into anything worse though. It’s hard to relate because it’s like the symptoms I describe don’t correspond with people actually Dx’d with SZ but then people with ocd and Bipolar disorder are like “what are you talking about I don’t feel like thst”

Hi @James_B ! I have SZA but do not know if I am exactly bipolar. I don’t feel any mania now, but I am on an antipsychotic. That sucks to be in between an actual diagnosis. I hope your doctor finds the right one. Antipsychotics are prescribed for both bipolar and SZ/SZA. My AP helps me alot.

I get along well with other MI people, I don’t get along with others non MI people. I am paranoid sz

The only opportunity i had to relate to others with MI was in hospital and I got on fine with everyone. Nobody talked about their diagnosis so I don’t know what anybody had.

I changed AP several time just due to weight gain, it’s the main reason 20yrs is shaved off our life expectancy. So getting the right med is definitely applicable.

It takes time to understand another person, on line or in a forum it is hard cause you are going by a couple of lines of text. There is a guy at one of my work sites that clearly has mental health issues although I’m at a loss to what it is. Hopefully in time I’ll figure it out

Written text can be taken the wrong way bc you can’t hear :ear: the tone of voice

Agreed. I always misunderstand and read into text messages things that may not be intended to offend.
