It meant a lot to me to be able to read but today I don’t do it to escape because I can’t escape. I had to struggle many years to be able to read. I sought out writers that were simple. Simple does not mean stupid. I’m 53 and I find myself wondering: am I going to improve into my old age or have I reached peak proficiency? What do you think?
I find the more I try to read and push myself the period of time that I read in one setting doesn’t get much better, but it gets better, just a little…I just discovered spotify has audiobooks …last night I got to start a book I’ve wanted forever …“trejo…”
I struggled to read until my 20’s. Its a lot easier now and i read a fair few books. I couldnt focus enough in the past. Now they are my favorite form of home entertainment.
I couldn’t read at all when I first got sick. Now I routinely read very large insurance policy documents as part of my job. I can read up to 50 in one day. I have gotten extremely good at scanning them quickly and noting coverages that are present and missing. I still seem to be improving with practice and I just turned 55. I think there is still room for improvement as we age.
I find it helpful to choose a small book that I really like. Not pressure myself to take on something dense. There are so many books I wish I could just glaze through. Im better at narrating books in my mind than reading, and I visualize them. Sometimes its like I have to pull a sort of energy from the depths of my awareness, but its still there.
Does anyone here read audiobooks?
I honestly can’t do physical or ebooks. I just don’t have the attention span or the patience or the ability to sit still and read them.
But with an audiobook I am able to do something while reading. Such as: knitting or exercising at the gym or cleaning or anything.
I want to be able to do that, I’m bad at multi-tasking and wish I could do one thing while doing another but I have a one track mind or something haha
Everyone is. We can either do one thing really well or multiple things okay-ish (or worse).
I sometimes listen to audiobooks. I only listen while driving my car though. I find it hard to sit in my house and listen.
