Pushing back at work

Hey everyone

I am learning a lot of new stuff at work which is great

But I got a message yesterday saying that I need to know the formulas in math for the statistics

Literally have zero maths skills

It has pushed me too far mentally, and I feel completely overwhelmed and don’t know what to do

Already I have learnt a lot of stuff, but this is like a new language to me and I don’t get it

Why do I have to know the purpose math if I understand the concept and the programming code does the calculation for me just by typing simple words?

I am not sure what to say or do about this

Maybe look for a statistics book.

I’m currently reading ‘medical statistics made easy’ to refresh my statistical knowledge, since it has been a while.

There are books that explain these concepts in an easy way.

Or else you can ask if they will fund a University course. When I was working in Singapore I needed to know PivotTables in Excel and I didn’t. My boss paid for a course at the National University of Singapore. Still have the certificate.

I pre-hacked a bunch of spreadsheets with the formulas pre-entered. Just have to plug numbers in one side and the results come out the other. Time saver when calculating premiums for large fleets.

You’ve already overcome a lot at work, I’m sure you can learn this new thing and overcome this obstacle too.

IMO It’s very easy to make a mistake if you’re plugging numbers into formulas if you don’t understand the formals well. Do a good time explaining to your boss(es) what you’re working on and they’ll understand you already have your plate full. So “I’m working on A, B, C & D now but I can learn statistics later.”

I did something similar, I told a director I’d like to work on improving some processes but was too busy with grunt work and he took the grunt work away. Anywho,

You will do fine, sir. Let me remind you that you are FREAKIN’ AMAZEBALLS. I wish you believed in you as much as I believe in you.

They won’t do that I don’t think, but I spoke to my manager, and we’re going to sort out training.

Building Excel models is my speciality! Now I am learning to do it in R. Going well. Already taken a project that was not complete, and adapted it - and it works!

I have also learned how to use other platforms as well, and Python is next

It was just this stats thing is not really relevant right now, and my manager agreed with me that it will take some time/training to get there.

I will. It was just the person who put this on me was trying it on. But he is being ‘informed’ that this is not currently my area of expertise, and that I am a work in progress!

Agreed. But the formulas are being built by R functions and commands, so effectively my coding skill is enough right now to get the work done, and within the team there is plenty of knowledge in this area to support each other. This is what we’re doing now until I get up to speed.

Evaluation of results needs a group effort, and my manager I think agrees with this

My confidence has never been that good. But thank you for encouraging.

It’s been really a great start, but this stats thing is going to take time, and as I spoke to my manager about this in the end, I will be getting proper training.

I took yesterday off, so 3 day weekend

If holiday is supposed to help, I should feel better by Monday

I’m not a big math person either, I’m currently researching math.

Now I have not seen this video since I’m not educated enough in math yet, but this site has great books for teaching yourself.
