so I decided to get a dog as a companion. it would be nice to bond with a puppy but I don’t want the hassle of house training it. so am thinking I will adopt one a bit older. im not going to get it anytime soon, but maybe in a year or two I will have enough money to care for one. what do you think? puppy or house trained rescue?
I have to house train a puppy right now. It’s annoying. I suggest going with a house trained rescue.
Rescue is a good thing to do. Lots of good animals out there that need a home!
Rescue is so awesome! I got my dog as a pup and house training was awful.

Think about adopting one as a kitten/puppy if you want a well behaved animal. Animals from rescue often have behavioral traits that take some getting used to. Chloe, a cat we rescued, runs from everybody who approaches her unless she’s been around them for a month at least. It’s very hard to get her indoors until you bond with her. And if you leave her life for a few months, you have to build that trust up again. It can be very frustrating. The cat we had when I was a kid, who we got as a kitten, was always friendly and never ran from anybody. Much easier cat to raise and interact with.
Still your decision. I would consider it everybody’s responsibility to rescue at least one pet in their lifetime, but that doesn’t make it wrong to want a puppy/kitten at a different stage in life.
I would say go rescue.
I have two dogs. I put my name on a waiting list and made a deposit on a puppy. While I was on the waiting list I found a rescue on Facebook.
When my name came up on the list to pick a puppy I got the puppy too.
They are both great dogs.
I was thinking about what it would be like to have one of each when I was making my post. I’m guessing it’s good for both of them? We’ve never had more than one pet at a time.
Also, crate training and clicker training were highly effective for me.
what is clicker training?
im leaning towards a rescue I think, one of my dogs growing up was a puppy, and the other was a rescue. no problems with either one, but the rescue didn’t poo in the house.
mom mentioned something about getting a service dog for me for Christmas, but I had to tell her I couldn’t afford a dog right now. but it got my hopes up, so im thinking I will probably get one fairly soon in life.
Clicker training is when you have a thing that makes a clicking sound, and you make the dog associate that sound with special treats.
Then when you train the dog, you make the clicks to reward positive things, and give the dog a treat.
Eventually the click will be associated with instant rewards in its brains, and it will motivate the dog to please you.
Studies have shown positive reinforcement is more effective than punisment.
