Prolactin and Maternal Behavior

Hi,

I’m studying Prolactin, a consequence of Psychiatric drugs . . I’ve been googling it, and I’ve found it increases Maternal instincts . . Is that true . . The Oxford University book of Endocrinology and, Diabetes says it does . . I feel like a pregnant woman, on drugs . . .

Here’s the Page - -

My doctor’s only say it’s psychotic, delusions, about medicine . .

Here’s another article, I’m not crazy . . .

Last . . . .

are you on Risperdal? I had to switch.

It’s not a serious side - effect, just a little bit annoying, I wanted to hear how others felt . . .

well hell yes, unless you want breast cancer.

No, I mean I switched to Clozapine, that only gives a small increase, so the side - effects are mostly gone, here’s graph that shows Clozapine is better, if you have Prolactin side - effects . .

You can just be asked to be put on a drug that doesn’t do that, like Zyprexa or, Ziprasidone ( Geodon ), then it mostly goes away . . I had a lot of Hormone imbalances on Risperdal . . It helped when I switched drugs, Clozapine is the best, though it increases diabetes . . I feel good, not many side - effects . . . A new drug, and it’s a lot better . .

I just found it very annoying, on Risperdal . . They say Risperdal is the worst, on Prolactin . . My doctor switched me to Clozapine, now it’s so much better . .

Any - way, if you have a lot of hormonal imbalance feelings, it might be the Prolactin . . For me, going on Clozapine was the best, I don’t have much side - effects and, the diabetes I get Meds for, also Exercise and, diet advice, from staff . . .

I just wanted to say, if you have the emotions of a pregnant woman, it’s mostly just Prolactin . . Science says it, Oxford university Professors, Research papers, Biological books And, stuff . . .

For me, switching Drugs took it away, almost completely . . It’s mostly gone in the morning, I only feel it if I wake up, because the t-v was running . . It’s an easy fix, just ask for a different drug . .

I get it. You’re convinced that risperidone had side effects you didn’t know to expect. Have you looked at the leaflet you get with each drug from your pharmacy? I do. You should.

I’m not saying that it did or didn’t cause side effects. I AM SAYING that the side effects are most likely listed. Sometimes, they use big medical terminology.

I wish you well, but it’s probably better that you talk to a pharmacist. They, generally make sure the side effects are listed. Your pdoc is not to blame here.

That’s very true but, I checked . . On Danish FDA it says, when reporting side - effects, there are unknown or, not properly represented side - effects . . I read a Medical article that said, it’s well-known in medicine, among doctors . . when a new drug hits the market, not all side - effects have been found . . I do read the list that follows the pills, and they all say the drugs, anti-psychotics and, some anti-depressants increase Prolactin, above normal . . The incidence is often listed as like, over 10 % . . Again, I’ve read articles saying when they research it, they find that number is ’ 30 - 55 % ’ Or, ’ 50 - 85 % ’ but, because side - effect lists only have the category, ’ Over 10 % ', it looks mis-leading . . The Danish FDA also writes, that these lists are strangely written . . For instance, if it says ’ 1 - 10 % ’ get some side - effect, like Prolactin, that can mean 10 % get it, within a week or, that 1 % get it, only after a year . . So, the Official side - effect lists are kind a Not so good, for Scientific information, you’re left guessing . . The Danish FDA wrote this to me, in a message, where I asked them . .

My point is simply this . . On Risperdal, I felt I had many emotions, like a pregnant woman, and, it felt bad . . I told my doctor and, he said that’s not a side - effect . . But, the articles and, books, for instance Oxford University Book on Hormone science ( Endocrinology ) says it does . . And, many other books, web-pages by doctors or, professors and, research articles says it does . . My doctor admitted that the articles and, books were good and, praised me for finding them, my Own psychiatrist . .

So, we made a deal, we agreed to put me on Clozapine, which causes almost no Prolactin and, it went away . . I just wanted to ask if other people had experienced this on Risperdal, if so, just ask for another drug . . My Doctor obliged immediately, he was happy to switch drugs and, blood tests confirmed my Prolactin got a lower, so, it was nice . .

What concerns me is, this side - effect appears to be predicted, by medicine, the books, the articles . . But, why isn’t it on any side - effect list, for Risperdal . . Any-way, I got pregnant woman moods, my nipples grew in size and, they became sensitive, ’ tingling ’ . . I also developed pregnancy delusions and, it was very hard . . So, I told my doctor, showed him the articles and, he recommended Clozapine or, Abilify . . I didn’t want to try Abilify so, I was put on Clozapine . . Now, I have no side - effects, unless I wake at night, when I get the pills, other than that, no side - effects . .

This article, by a Gynecologist-obstetrician says the same thing . . Any-way, I’ve found Zyprexa is good and, Ziprasidone ( Geodon ? ! ), the side - effects get better and, on Clozapine they basically are gone, no matter, gone . . I just wanted to ask, if other people had these experiences on the older drugs or, Risperdal . . that are know, to elevate Prolactin more than the other later, second - generation drugs . . Clozapine, in particular, doesn’t cause this . .

Amisulpride, Paliperidone, Risperidone, Haloperidol they all increase prolactin and if taken at high doses and for long period of time(months) u will start developing man boobs. Its still not clear which drug increases prolactin the most.

But in the end i would say your mileage may vary. Some people get side effects, some don’t.

This is very true, you grow boobs on Drugs that give high prolactin, here’s a picture of a man who got a massive settlement, for developing 46DD breasts, on Risperdal . . I grew boobs on Quetiapine ( Seroquel ) but, not nearly as big as this, two of my friends in Denmark went on older drugs, they also grew boobs . . Theirs were bigger, than this image, or a little bit bigger . . It’s called pseudo-gynecomastia and, is caused primarily by hormone - imbalances . . For me, I got off Risperdal and, started exercising more, eating more vegetables, cutting down on gravy . . They went away, and the new drug Clozapine doesn’t do this, so it’s easily fixed, get a better Drug . .

Risperdal, that causes the highest Prolactin, also made my nipples and, the areola ( the red area around the nipple - point ) grow, to about 2x, to 2½x size, in 2 - 3 months . . I still have that, though I quit the drugs a long time ago . . It’s called ’ hypermammatrophy ', in doctor language . . .

Prolactin is a Maternity hormone, it prefers the body for taking care of babies, it’s also behind the maternal instincts or, moods . . That’s why you can get milk flow, as a man ( galactorrhea ), get sensitive, ’ tingly ’ nipples and, many other things . . Prolactin makes the body ready, to deliver and, nurture a baby . .

I wanted to ask if any-body else had these symptoms, for starters my Psychiatrist just said every-thing I said was psychotic, he didn’t even do any blood tests . . Later blood tests proved my Prolactin was too high, on Risperdal . .

Yeah I have prolactin issues. I don’t feel pregnant.

I take these drugs with side effects because I don’t want to be psychotic.

You have to decide what’s worse being really psychotic or having your nipples a bit enlarged. If you don’t like it you can change to another drug.

I don’t think taking your psychiatrist to court is gonna have any good outcomes. Obviously you need to be on meds.

What things do you get from Prolactin . .

Also, I’m a man . . I don’t like crippling side - effects, that hurt . .

Now that I’m on Clozapine, with almost no Prolactin, I feel better . . But, I got really mad when, they filled me with Maternity hormones and, Emotions . .
