Jared Mumm, a college professor in Commerce, Texas accused his entire class of using AI to write papers.
I had a kid today whose essay on San Francisco trolley cars was perfect. I lived in the san fran area for two years recently and asked them some questions about the trolley system. They had no idea what I was talking about. I am not so sure they wrote the paper lol.
I wonder how many people use chat gpt. At the age of the kids we teach it really seems rare cuz their parents monitor their tech access strictly.
My wife is a high school teacher and over half of her students are turning in writing that is suddenly well above their former writing level.
This ticks me off cuz I am an experienced English major who can write like the AI does, I call it Wikipedia writing. It just shows a general level of intelligence that I would argue is at least slightly above average, at least high enough so that it raises suspicion when everybody performs at that level.
Our class is ESL so when something is organized perfectly it raises a lot of questions. Even the smartest students make tiny mistakes here and there.
I tend to use commas like a doughnut shop uses spinkles. It’s pretty sus if I’m suddenly using commas properly.

Donuts should be both glazed and frosted this is objective truth
Maybe students should be tested on how well they can use tools than on some mundane paper. Lol
The whole school system needs to be overhauled
The cat is out of the bag.
I prefer essays over stupid multiple-choice tests.
I prefer no tests lol
. To be honest essays are unnecessary as well.
There needs to be real world skills in school over that. Project based stuff and collaboration does more for students.
School is supposed to teach students how to research and reason on their own. You don’t learn when you have someone else doing your homework for you. My daughter is doing a research project over the summer for her uni courses. She uses the Bing AI to summarize articles for her to decide if they are useful rather than having to read them all. If the summary is relevant then she reads the entire article. All of her writing in the project is her own.
Yeah thats how it should be ![]()
In job or business you are not giving or selling tests. So it is weird that students are asked to write essays, give tests and expected to do something completely different in outside college and unis.
Then they are called entitled or hard to work with.
I write complicated insurance proposals for my account executive. I do need to communicate with the client to ascertain their needs so that my proposals are accurate. I send out very extensive surveys and then I fine-tune them from there.
You are right. Despite having dropped out of college I still write more drafts than a college graduate. Recently when I was depressed my dad brought up me writing good drafts to cheer me up.
I was looking at things I am not good at and what school didn’t teach while ignoring things it did teach me. Ignored critical thinking/research aspect you brought up.
This skill is probably one of the more useful skills in life whether personal or business related. Good decision making skills.
Our university is having the same problem too. Professors have no faith in our essays.
I saw a news where professor using chatgpt to check if students got the essays from AI and it gave false results saying students copied but they did not. So this AI is kind of both a menace and helpful.
I would say it is useful for quick check and solving complex problems. It may affect the way we think.
There are both false positive and false negatives.
