Probiotics for Schizophrenia?

Hi everyone,

I just found some information on the internet that probiotics were effective for schizophrenia and boosted serotonin levels, has anyone here tried this? If so what did they do?

I’ve seen a lot of reports that this or that supplement will cure schizophrenia. I’ve taken lots of those things.

They probably are good for me. I still have schizophrenia, however.

I’ve worked my way through a couple of bottles for other reasons. I have a ulcer.

I can’t say I felt anything particular change with my mental state after using it. But I too have read that it can be beneficial. Like a root cause of bad mental health. I guess it depends on what individual bacteria culture each of us has. If the bacterial environment already is good probiotics proably wont do much. But if it’s bad, taking probiotics can possibly fix this which in turn can give better mental health.

well, I take em, that and prebiotics,
but who said it boosts serotonin levels.
can you site your source?
it’s just good for your belly and digestion.

I take it for digestion. Did not observe any sz benefit.
There is so much questionable stuff on the internet that it is good to link the source of the info.

I found out they help a bit, but I didn’t take them for SZ. I have diverticular disease and probiotics are known to help keep the gut healthier and lower the chance of infection in the diverticula. I started taking them and not only did they help my gut, they improved my head a bit as well. Some things I have learned…

The probiotic yogurt doesn’t seem to make much of a difference for me. I researched it and their proobiotics aren’t as “bio-available”. I’ve purchased probiotics off the shelf as room temp dry capsules and they haven’t worked so well, either. The expensive referigerated ones have a much more noticeable effect, but darn are they expensive. I learned that you can ferment your own sauerkraut at home and that it is full of natural probiotics. I gave that a shot and discovered that this works as well as the expensive refrigerated liquid probiotics from the health store, except that it’s dirt cheap.

Here’s the recipe:

It’s just cabbage and sea salt, super easy to make.

Yes they wpuld be a piece of the puzzle. For schizoprhnics who are melancholic or hqve depressive symptoms especially. Improving the gut good bacteria is conductive to good health. Vood overall health is important for brain health. Especially the gut since they say its like a second brain. Thanks for this post i think i should start taking probiotics too.

I take them for my stomach issues

I prefer prebiotic by far

I take Align probiotics daily.
Helps my digestive issues but probably does nothing for my mental illness.

It gives energy but not the one you want

Tasty bacteria, yummy.

You seem to know a lot about health…whats spirochete?

Wow thats actuqlly very interesting because my voices started around a time after i was bitten by a number of ticks.

Go figure.

Condolences, though.

Thats pretty intrresting…idk if it was the cause of it or not…could still be because of sleeping in the cold but, i was homeless around that time and bitten for the first time by a number of ticks every day…hope i didnt get lyme disease from it.

There’s no correllation between bacteria and sz. If it was it would be reported but said punter likes to promote crackpot theories over science and it’s totally inappropriate. Don’t buy into that rubbish.

Hmmm i dont know if a virus and bacteria are related somehow but ive heard legitimate theories that schizophrnia may be caused by some sort of virus affecting the brain…many sufferers seem to be born during the winter months so i dint think its so infeasible…atleast as a contributing factor.

I dont think lyme disease necessarily causes sz but these kinds of infections, adding together to lessen the quality of the blood, increasing problems with black bile, could be a legitmate contributing factor.

They seem to be pretty informed about it. Thanks for speaking your opinion though @rogueone youre entitled to it. Hope we can keep peace.

There’s a big difference to winter births. It’s nothing to do with bacteria but theory is that it could be a viral event that affects in utero. That previous punter is obsessed with non scientific theories. It’s totally inappropriate.
